Have a new campaign started and my halfling spell thief bit the dust, was thing about how putting in a half orc ranger druid would go. and how did he come about what he is.

I was think about a lone suvivor ( as far as he knows) as a town that was attacked by some creature, was thiking either Dragon, Giants, or A Demon/Devil of some type. Then using that as the basis of his favored enemy.

or, his tutor/ mentor wasslain by either a lone group of Minotaurs or Illithids and that he now hunts them (what ever monstrous humanoid or Aberation you want).

or he loves the idea of a creature so much, like a dragon or outsiders so much that he knows so much about them that that is why it is his favored enemy. Kinda of like a respect your enemy thing, but to him it is not the enemy.

drawing a blank on back ground. any help would be appreciated.

As a sidenote: why exactly do you want to go ranger and druid? If it's just for flavour, you don't need a class to be a certain way. I'd suggest to go full ranger and make maximum use of your ranger spells. Being a full ranger doesn't mean you have to fight all the time. If you concentrate on your spells and special ablities (track, wild empathy, ..) you can be a very fine "druid", who can stand himself in combat when needed. Instead of concentrating on your combat stats, concentrate on your wisdom and play your character as a druid.

Of course, that's just a suggenstion.

Do you want help with your background related to your favoured enemy, or on everything except the favoured enemy?

In fact I have been working on a half orc Ranger Druid combo, and it makes sense as far as a child of parents that are a minorly well known love match for a human orc relationship - mom is a Human (Druid) and dad is an Orc (Ranger)

Out of love/respect for the parents the child learns both paths to protecting/assisting nature, but as a young adult she wants to step outside the "family forest" and see the great big world :)

I really like your favoured enemy is not really an enemy concept, if you don't mind too much I may try incorporating it. I do think I would pick an endangered creature - she uses her skills to protect them without allowing herself/them to come to great harm. I am thinking about a bird of prey or some other flying creature as her favoured enemy.

I also like that the ranger-druid could use two small wooden clubs (truncheons) as their primary melle weapons ( and no I have never seen any martial arts movies  ) , and for that extra boost she can cast the spell shillelagh on her weapons whenever it's needed.

Oh I figured the two small wooden clubs concept would link back to her Ranger father - it woud be a signature style that would let some people guess who her father/mentor is, that or they have heard of her mother's addition to the style.... second shillelagh! All in all it would allow the DM a hook for a bard (etc) knowing something about her background.

yeah, i can see that totally working to be cool character, or perhaps she heads out into the word ot bring back the Favored enemy to restore it to her home forest. Maybe as a gift to her parents for some reason.

nice. work on that
