Hello, I'm trying to come up with a good backstory for a half dragon(red)/troll. He is not full "matured" as a troll yet (only have 5 levels of the troll progression from SS) and it is a FR underdark campain. I was thinking something along the lines of he, along with a slew of other 1/2 dragons were bred by a sadistic red dragon to guard his treasure, but when the dragon was slain by a party of epic adventurers, he barely managed to escape into the the darkness. He wandered through the darkness deeper and deeper until he encountered a colony of mind flayers, who managed to capture him to use as slave labor. As he matured, he grew to larger(5thlvl Lg sz) and stronger and after being enslaved for more than a year was able to kill many of his captors and escape with the help of a drow theif who was also a prisoner. He harbers an intense hatred for flayers because of this and him and his drow comrade venture futher into the underdark where they find an abandoned city, they are ambushed by ghasts and his freind is slain.

That's all I have so far. Looking for opinions/suggestions for improvments, and also adventuring motivations. Thanks in advance.

what about being the result of a breeding experiment handled by mind flayers (they went too far with the joke "what would hapen if a troll mates with a dragon").

And then they used him until became enought strong for scaping.

Once wholely grewed you can make him a psionic warrior

"Grewed" isn't a word.

"Grown" is, and it fits with what you were trying (and failing) to say.

I like Griff's story. The half dragon/half troll could even get some half brothers with other abilities (an half goblin/half dragon rogue, an half kobold/half dragon sorceror, an half centaur/half dragon priest of Tiamat...) Who knows where this Red Dragon's madness ends?

I'm not so sure about the story... I guess I'm more curious about how this character will be played. Maybe I'm just always gonna have a preference for the core classes anyway.

What I DO LIKE is this brand new word "grewed", I'm rating it ten/ten but I don't think I'll find myself using it in everyday conversation some how...

How to play him? I don't think he grew with other trolls, so his referencies would be other half dragons (was it a female Red Dragon?). He should feel extremely stupid even compared to his goblinoïds half-brothers. Perhaps he instinctively fear fire, and must make a will check to use his breath weapon?

From an optimization point of view, will you find something to protect you from acid, and become invincible?

It is obvious why you would choose a red dragon. I just want to point out that red dragons are enourmously vain and self-centered.

I cannot imagine any red dragon mature enough to mate being willing to lower itself with a troll. I think that it woudl rather die fighting.

Whatever your story I would suggest checking out other dragon types. Perhaps a white dragon? they are known to mate with anythign that stays still long enough.

Or if it is an experiment by mind flayers then perhaps one of the fiendish or hellish dragon types that could be summoned and compelled to do such a disgusting act. many of your creatures from the lower planes are sick enough to even want to mate with a troll.

Justification of cheese... interesting. Well at least unlike many munchies, you're at least TRYING. :)

Luckily enough, there's a half red dragon/troll in a campaign I'm playing in.

He was bred for *insert evil purpose here (don't know why he exists yet)* and is sent out on missions by his draconic father. Getting loot, hiring thugs, etc, etc.

So, your arch rival could be a half gold dragon/human paladin/sorcerer of Torm that periodically tries to hunt you down and kill you. BTW, she really, really, really hates your guts. It's been fun to play! But all this may well be a touch difficult for you to work in.

Red dragons are not normally the sort that would mate with a Troll. So another way to justify this would be a polymorphed red dragon who was feebleminded. Never changed back. Had children who were strange. The half-dragon was driven out because of this and ended up meeting the flayers.

Meanwhile the dragon is healed and is gathering his/her offspring. This explains the decision to mate with a troll in less deliberate terms.

But it was nice to see a neat background for an unusual critter!

Oddly enough I am currently Dming a game where a Red dragon has breed with many monsters. but instead of creating guards he is infact creating fallowers. he belives that if enough sintient beings worship him then he can become a god. As well as trolls he has also abducted and breed with humens halflings, ogres, giants, two elves and a orc (the orc didn't survive long),

My ellite guard though are trolls each gifted with a ring that protects them from acid, and a ring of sustanace. combine this with thier natural immunity to fire and oh what a challenge to my Players.

I don't think a young Troll would have these but he would know about them.

Feel free to use any of this in your charcter and to change anything that you wish.

I designed a Half Red Dragon/Troll for a guy on this thread:
http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=168779&highlight=jukkang
It's pretty wicked

Anyway, after I designed a guy in my group started playing with ideas on why such a creature would exist. His favorite was that it was one of several genetically engineered creatures created by a group of wizards specifically for taking down a Tarrasque.
Hope that helps. If nothing else, take a look at the build; it's sweeet.

BTW, I'm now incorporating "grewed" and "referencies" into my daily langauge:D

hey celloshane, do you have something like that for a cr 9 or 10 build?, the ecl for troll/half dragon is 14 so a little too tough for my pc's...
