I am toying with the idea of a halfling ranger (archery) with a very high dex (hopefully) i figure he would hardly ever miss and would also have a nice AC, with proper skill selection (Hide, Sneak, Spot, Listen, Survival, Climb?, Jump?) he would be a master at stealth (gotta love hide bonus). i picture him as a loner with an unkempt appearence kind of like a hermit, a coarse beard and snarled long hair. not trusting of big folk but not fearing them either. hed be tough for a halfling hopefully a decent strength and con score. i can see him in my head with studded leather armor (hopefully +5 dex) 2 daggers on his belt a falchion strapped to his back, and a long bow in his hand cocked and ready to fire, as he pears through the underbrush. he may even become deadly accurate eventually (rogue levels).
what kind of Favored enemy do you suggest, do you like my skill selection, abilities might go DEX, STR, WIS, CON, INT, CHA (i figure hes pretty rude and dirty).

A quick question - which Combat Style is the ranger going to take? two weapon combat or archery? From the way you have written the character I'm guessing archery

****

For a real tough guy hafling say good bye to the falchion and take a weapon that allows you to use your character's high dex ( Weapon Finesse - knife ). It also shows the rest of the world that you are tough enough to not rely on a large blade - you're so good all you need is a bow and a knife.

Also even if your STR is not great you have a better chance at hitting the target in melee.

If he is to be a stealth based bow man ( and occasional knife in the back ) then he doesn't need the falchion, or it's extra weight - use a light weapon and your high dex for the better chance to hit.

Take the classes that allow you a regular progression in sneak attack or similar types of extra damage bonuses

If the character was a ranger/rogue with a knife, a bow, the combat style-archery and weapon finesse-knife he would have an role-playing bit too.

"I ain't big and neither are my wepons but I 'll hit you more often and in better spots than you'll hit me!"

*******
Also this way you could also move the character stats to
DEX, CON, WIS, STR, INT, CHA.

Or more skills with
DEX, CON, WIS, INT, STR, CHA.

Either way you would have a "tougher" character because of the higher CON and because "I don't need a big blade to be a man" or to his opponents - "you've got to hold that large weapon - cause your small brain doesn't know any better"

Oh and with your high DEX - take a look at the Tumble skill - it can keep you alive

Another question - riding animal?

yeah i was going to go the archery path. i still like the falchion although you make a good point. i was hoping to maybe get a pig as an animal companion, one that i could ride. i have no idea about favored enemies maybe just magical beasts.

There are plenty of magical beasts out there and you skill selection will help for a mobile guerilla ranger. Might want to consider taking brachionation and levels of Order of the Bow Intitiate. d8 instead of d6 , easyer conditions to meet I think (I dont have the book next to me right now) and if you get it to level 10 I think you can do this precise damage from 60 feet away instead of 30

think about spreading rumors of a beastman roaming the woods. In feudal japan ninja would aid rumors of Ninja being magical, unkillable death demons.

Them"A half man half ape roams these forests. They say that you never hear him comming, cus your already dead"
You"I heard that an entire patrol got a glimpse of him and his eyes where the color of blood and had fangs and claws like an animal"

Good description you gave, I like him already. As a true tracker/scout kind o guy I would say he prefers to travel light. 1 hunting knife, bow and arrows and camouflaged simple clothing with leather armour.
In case you saw the movie "the Hunted" (if you didn't go see it) I'd use the character Tommy lee Jones playes as your hafling. He fits the profile perfectly.

As first favourite enemy, in roleplaying terms it has to fit his background. If he is a hunter he might be very good at killing normal animals or magical animals in case of an enchanted forsest. If he is a war veteran (maybe if you play Eberron, you lived through the Last War) he might have worked for the army as a scout and might be good at killing humans or Orcs or Elves, whom ever was the enemy.

Stats

STR 10 (above avarage for a halfing),
DEX 19
CON 12
INT 12
WIS 15
CHA 8

As a Companion if he has one, I'd take a hawk. A companion who can alert him of danger.

Instead of a domesticated pig -try to tame a boar - very cool and nasty animal ;)

Plus wild boars are not large but are very tough animals - so it would fit in with your character's tough guy persona.

Either way ( pig or boar ) your character also can have the nickname "pigboy", which would work well with his - "untamed and rude" look and style.

Your character should have a reason for a favored enemy.
What did they do to you/yours? Was one or more family member/friend/villagers either killed or maimed by them?

The following background suggestion is based on the premise that your charcter had already started training as a ranger, but had not yet picked your favored enemy. This specific event then gives your character a reason for choosing his favoured enemy. You can always rearrange it to fit your character.

Your much loved younger sister was attacked, taunted and crippled by a magical leopard( mountain lion, wolf, etc, whatever fits your character ). She also be came totally terrified at night of the least little noise and had nightmares for weeks - until you brought her the beasts head ;)

***

If you are going to take magical beasts as favored enemy you might to think about an animal companion that has low light vision or something similar ( ie an owl or a bat ). That is because all magical beasts get both darkvision(60') and low light

Does your character have any living family members?

If yes - how many?

If no - why not?
