I'm currently brainstorming a new chracter backstory. This is my first attempt to acctually tie in my character with an already exsisting FR canon character. Although it's my favorite setting i've never read any of the novels, so i dont know how well this might work, but here goes. this is all rough draft by the way, so it is by no means an organized piece of work lol.

The character (still unnamed) comes from an upper middle class family in Waterdeep. Most of the family has had formal magical training and are well known in such social circles, However this particular family has produced more black sheep and bad eggs than a little bit, And are widely assumed to be associated with darker magics and illegal as well as amoral things (mostly accurate) The family publicly oppose the current open lord of Waterdeep and have, on several occasions, attempted to bribe, blackmail, and outright threaten there way into the ranks of the Lords of Waterdeep. So far all attempts have been unsuccessful. Unknown to most, this family also shares a strong, if ancient blood line with that of Halistar Blackcloak himself.

The character, being groomed his entire life by a cold and distant mother, to persue arcane schooling and was immediatly enrolled into a secret cabal of wizards that was headed by two of Halistar's former apprentices (forgotten the names, one is that half scorpion guy). However, determined to make his own way, secretly enrolled in another more prestigious academy (Blackstaff's) to prove that he did not need to ride on the coat tails of his great uncle's infamy or fear. He continued his study of the arcane, becoming a skilled and promising student. Although he attempts to keep his family's devious reputation in the dark, tales of his heritage often precede him, On occasion he uses it to his advantage to cower advesaries.

I picture this guy being kinda dark and moody, yet noble at heart. Simply being raised by a distant mother and strict teachers has left him kinda sour.

so? what you guys think?

Not bad, but one issue...What prevents the character from calling on the services of his family? Has he been disowned?

And what alignment is he/what goals does he have? Is he trying to flee his family's dark plans, or does he intend to rule all on his own? Or does he just want his own freedom?

Well i figured he'd mostly resent his family and there bad image. And because of this his already cold and demanding mother would probably be more an antagonist than anything, consently thwarting anything good he tries to do, and maybe even tricking him into evil deeds (all up to the DM of course) But no, he wouldn't generally be able to call upon his family's resorces, seen as kind of the black sheep.

As far as alignment goes, i'm thinking neutral..not sure on the lawful/chaotic scope of things tho.

On a side note, i was thinking today on what kind of impact his would have on any other PCs in the group. i would just love to see there faces when all there (eventually) high level characters are in the deep, cold, recesses of Undermountain, face to face with Halister Blackcloak himself, tensions running high, sweat pouring, steel gleaming,..when my character simply says "...hello uncle" BWAHAHA

I passed this idea past my wife the other day, and she remarked how similar the story seemed to the Sirius Black character in the Harry Potter series, So i watched it, and yea, i think the family history is very similar, although the personality is way diffrent.
