My Wood Elf Ranger from the Deep Forest, currently campaigning in the Cold Wood north of the Silver Marches of Faerun, is levelling up to level 5. Level 5, of course, is when he gets his 2nd favored enemy. But here is my dilemma:

Cordell (the ranger) had orcs as his 1st favored enemy. It fits in his background (orcs of Gruumsh raided and destroyed his childhood home) and he has fought a truckload of them. Unfortunately, orcs and humans are really all that he fought. He is also Chaotic Good, if that would mean anything in this equation.

To provide continuity, should I take human as a 2nd favored enemy? Is there anything that would be negative to taking humans as a favored enemy?

Finally, he in on his way to understanding and eventually joining the Harpers. Would taking humans as a favored enemy make a difference in this venture?

Thanks for your insight,
Rick

Maybe you should think for a moment what it means to have a 'favorite enemy'. A F.E. is just a creature which he has studied closely over time and knows very well (hence can dish out enormous damage). So taking humans as a favored enemy sounds very good to me, since it will reflect his training.

So what if he joins the harpers? Do you think they will paint on his face 'human-hater'? Especially when he doesn't hate humans in particular? So unless he's going to walk around with parts of human strapped to his belt, he should be fine and seeing that he fights a lot of humans and orcs, it may even be advisable!
