I recently started a new character, he was originally going to be an NPC, but I quit DMing for a while to play and decided to use him. He was supposed to be a vampire as an npc, and I want to talk to my DM about afflicting him later in his career.
-Can anyone help me flesh out his background a little?
-How would you play him / what are good questions or traits to address when playing him

This is what I have so far:
***************
Abner Izdihar Lumilhein
[Gnome] Ranger 1
17 years old.
Born in the city of Winhil, in northern Kinvarra.
Sailed to Khunsar as a cabin boy on the sea dwarf ship Esteera.
Wandered the desert for 2 years with a caravan of wizards ands traders, until it was attacked by Jinpyon zealots, he was captured. Within a month the Red Legion had put down the rebellion by order of the King of Orgetor. He then joined the Legion at the age of 13, but was dismissed by the church for inappropriate conduct with an archpriests niece after 3 years. For the past year Abner has been wandering the eastern countryside of Magesk in search of a small fortune.

Abner distrusts magic, but holds no ill will towards its users. He prefers "the old fashion way."

Habits: Smokes redblossom habitually
Favorite Drink: Whisky
Favorite Food: Lobster tail and peppered lamb.
**************
notes on the setting:
-The Red Legion is another name of the Church of Athyr, called Axehead - god of battle and strength
-Magesk - central continent, much like north america
-Kinvarra - major nation on a northern island, full of green pastures and down to earth people
-Orgetor - a hardy nation between the Jade mountains and one of the largests deserts on the planet, high dwarven population.
-Jin'pyon zealots - witch monks of the desert. They protect the commoners and desert tribes from outside forces and uphold the cultural ideals of the region

Well, for starters, he's obviously randy (misconduct with the archpriest's neice, you say?). So perhaps he makes passes at every woman he meets. And if his charisma is pretty high, he might make some progress, wink wink nudge nudge.

As for the background, ask yourself some questions. Why was he on the sea dwarf ship in the first place? What drove him to wander the desert? How did he come to be a ranger? Who was his teacher?

Hope that helps.

First of all, I love the concept of sea dwarves.

The character sounds cool. Between the smoking, the drinking, and the "inappropriate conduct" he sounds like a real fun guy.

My Sea Dwarves (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=184268)

Thank you, he's VERY fun to play.
hmm, How did he become a Ranger? He's not the typical PHB Ranger, but growing up in a farming community he's experienced with animals and used to an outdoors setting, the Fight Style type things he learned in the Red Legion obviously since it caters to most things martial. As he gets older and does more adventuring he will most likely multiclass into Fighter or Rogue, depending on what happens to him. While in the Red Legion he trained with a quiet young man named Killian Orest (a member of his current party, and longtime friend)
He left his home shortly after the beginnings of a famine, sent away by his parents for his own good to try and make something of himself in a land full of opportunity and more importantly – food.
He was kidnapped in the streets of Khunsar and sold as a slave the next day to the archmage Solmung. The great wizard was going on an expedition into the desert in search of the ruins of ancient Rhamaz-Quet under the sands of the Hulu’shai desert.
