I plan on starting to play a character like the one in the topic in the Forgotten Realms. The idea behind the character is that his father, a devout Helmite, has forced him into the fighter's career, and in order to please him, he has taken up studying magic in secret so that he might overcome his physical limitations. However, I feel that the character lacks a definate goal somewhere on the horizon that can serve to entertain others than just myself. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Right. So in short:

Father = Fighter in the service of Helm
Son = Fighter/Wizard, using wizard to overcome any weaknesses...correct?

I'll agree on the lack of a goal. Just a couple of ideas:

- He's out to avenge his father
- He's out to prove he's nothing like his father and be accepted into the order of Helm...for whatever reason.
- He's out to show whoever debunked his father that they made the wrong choice...which would explain the choice of wizard over cleric
- His father is/was really overbearing and wouldn't suffer any penalties of sorts. Now he's out to escape his fathers wrath.
