Hey, I'm trying to come up with a backstory for an avariel swashbuckler who later goes on to become a bladesinger. His wings were sawn off on a scouting mission gone awry, and he was taken for a brief period as a slave. But, I'm not really privvy on where to find info on Avariels. It seems to be lacking. I've found a few good websites, but nothing cohesive or official. The two or three pages in Races of Faerun just don't cut it. Help, please. =(

if you read the year of rogue dragon trilogy it features a bladesinger Avarial.

That's exactly what I was going to say. It's an excellent series, and gives quite a bit of insight into the avariel race.

Is he an outcast, or still a member of his clan?

If he's an outcast, I would have him seek acceptance by other elves, especially as he strives towards the bladsong. He may view that as his path towards redemption, or true "elfhood" in his eyes.

If he's still a member, perhaps he is seeking to be a Bladesinger to make up for his percieved uselessness from having no wings.

Either way, the avariels are a rather barbaric race, intent on hiding and staying amongst the forest, and avoiding the ouside world if at all possible. He obvioulsy has been exposed to the outside world more than most, perhaps he is entranced by it.

With the lack of wings, do you want it to be a constant hinderance apon the character?

Because without proper reason, by the time he is able to get into the Prc... he will proabably be able to get his wings back via a Regeneration spell. Failing that, a Wish or Miracle spell a few levels later.

Perhaps his wings were broken in the womb and never formed properly, or he is under some sort of curse.

Any reason you can give that will nullify the use of magic to regain the use of his wings will add to the role playing value of the character.

There would be nothing worse than for your character to be in a dark and serious moment, telling of the pain of not being able to fly with the rest of his people. When a priest causally walks past and taps him on the shoulder... then his wings suddenly spring back into working condition.

Totally ruin the foundation of your character.

Hope this helps some.

If you want a cheap way out, just cross Aerie's Backstory (Baldur's Gate Two) with the Avariel from Year of Rouge Dragons backstory.
