| Bud Green10-04-04, 03:15 AM | I have some good ideas (I think), but they are sketchy and could use some filling in. I am looking for ideas for background, personality, etc, as well as hints on character optimization (so long as it fits the character). #4 Warforged Druid #4, like all Warforged, was born of a House Cannith creation forge. He was forged after the war had ended. He and 9 other warforged were to be sold to (some nation) as weapons of national defense, but the signing of Threshold occurred before this could happen and he found himself a 'free machine', as it were. He had been part of the last production run of warforged. But before he was allowed his freedom, House Cannith had one last task for him and the other 9 warforged in his production run. To tear down the creation forges that had spawned his race, as mandated by the Threshold Treaty (as per the Eberron book). This was a traumatic event for him. He obeyed the order, as he was built to do. He helped tear down the forges and shatter the molds. Maybe he didn't understand the full implications of it at the time, but has pondered it ever since. He knows that his own race, such as it is, is now doomed to extinction by his own hand. For a time he was in constant turmoil. He was built for war, and now the war is over. He was built to be commanded, but there is nobody to command him. He has destroyed the forges and doomed his own kind. Should he have rebelled against the order - against his very creators? Or is his race merely an abomination - a necessary evil in time of war - a race of machines, not even a race at all? To reconcile what he has done, he must come to grips with his own identity, and the identity of his kind. He becomes obsessed with the philosophical question - what is the nature of life? Thus he becomes a druid. He devotes himself to the study of life. He wants confirmation that he is a living creature. But he dreads that confirmation even more, because it would mean he helped snuff the life out of his entire species. Well that's about it so far. Just a long-winded concept really. I'm open to any ideas anyone has. Stuff like where he would go after becoming free and what he would do. What kind of skills/feats should he have, or what classes/PrC to take later on? Oh, and my other idea is that he doesn't wear clothes. But he does wear a hood or a bag over his head. He has no sex organs to cover or be embarrassed about, but he does feel shame about his face. Every other creature's face he has ever seen has been so expressive - able to register joy, pain, fear, or sadness. His face is but a piece of steel, and registers nothing. It is a constant reminder that he is different from everyone else, and a source of shame to him. |

If I understand correctly, a Warforged is some kind of golem, but with his own intelligence, right? Ok, here is what I see that could be added to your background. After destroying the forge, #4 was free. He should have wandered a bit in cities or in the country; everywhere he goes, he sees people with feelings and emotions, and it scared him. Desperated, he enter a forest, searching only the peace of mind. There, he could have met a druid (a nymph or a dryad could be really cool, especially if a warforged is somekind immune to the nymph's Blinding Beauty ability). The druid taught him that he shouldn't be afraid about life and emotions. #4 is still sceptical, until he meets the animal who will become his animal companion: he is fascinated about the mutual respect they feel for each other. |

If I understand correctly, a Warforged is some kind of golem, but with his own intelligence, right? Correct. I really like your idea about meeting a dryad or nymph. I will have to doublecheck but I think Warforged are immune to those types of effects. I will incorporate that into his background. |

So, you might have him take a couple of levels in elemental savant or horizon walker, (if those are viable options in the Eberron campaign setting) so he can better understand these creatures of his "flesh". |

He could be trying to find meaning in any way possible, and the best way to do that could be by exploring all paths of magic. Especially since his race was created with magic. He could make homunculi and boguns, trying to understand his own life by creating other somewhat similar forms of life. I recall there being some interesting new homunculi in the Eberron book. The biggest worry with this path is that you can easily create an unplayable character, or just not have the stats to make it easy to multi-class at all. -Keli |
