My group is about to start on an Eberron campaign and I thought of Paladin/Exorcist of the Silver Flame as my character. I'm playing the character as more of a supernatural fighter such as Paladin Anderson from Hellsing or Angel.

My one problem is coming up with a good backstory, on how he felt the call to serve the Silver Flame as a Paladin and why he chose to be an Exorcist.

A cool idea for an Eberron paladin could be a young man coming from an opportunist familly. With the contact of a priest of the Silver Flame, he saw he was fundamentally good, and he decided to be a servant of the Silver Flame. The rest of his familly was disgusted by this idea, but they didn't want to oppose the Silver Flame church, so they tried to frame or discredit him. But your character persevered, and became a paladin of the Silver Flame. As for why he became an Exorcist, perhaps is it just an affinity with that job, perhaps is he just good at turning undeads? Or if you want something more personal, perhaps did he had a bad experience with the ghost of his great uncle?

You could come from an extremely devout family, perhaps your grandparents were attacked by werewolves and the crusades of the Silver Flame saved them and their kin - and by extension - you. Thus your family has, for three generations, been devoted to the SF; perhaps to the brink of being Puritan (see, the SF in Q'Barra).

THe Church you grew up in, however, is more progressive. Instead of preaching about the lycanthropes amongst us (to scare the faithful and keep them devout), the Priest you grew up with has given homilies about possessions and evil spirits and keeping yourself pure to ward off possession.

Perhaps you were an altar boy and one night the Priest called you to the baptismal, along with other members of the clergy, to hold down a man who was possessed. There, in your impressionable adolescence, you witnessed an exorcism first hand. You knew what you wanted to do when YOU grew up. Cast out evil spirits from the innocent. Protect the faithful. So, at the age of majority, you went to the seminary/citadel/cathedral in Thrane where young hopefuls must pass the tests to become a Paladin.

You have emerged a Chosen of the Silver Flame and are ready to fullfill your destiny.

You have discovered in your years of study that the Purge was only the first step towards erradicating a much larger thread. I is not the lycans that were the problem but the demons that caused the curse of lycantrophy in the first place. They are the real evil and they are the ones that should be utterly destroyed.
When confronted about the Inquisition you admit the Church was wrong but you also state that they cannot be blamed, shifters and followers of the Flame have a common enemy, the true enemy and cause of the Inquisition, de demons that walk amongst us. The children of the Lords of Dust.

I worked out a background. We had use of a random background chart to help get a good idea, and it was a matter of piecing it together.

Name:Alexander Boros
Race:Human
Class: Paladin
Region:Thrane

Alexander Boros was born the son of a successful lawyer, Lankester Boros who represented the Dwarven house in North Ridge. His mother, Linda was a stay at home mother who worked with the home affairs. After a successful case, the Boros family moved to a small town in Thrane to run their own firm and be closer to the Flame as they were devout worshipers of the Silver Flame.
During his youth, Alexander would sneak out at night with other adolescents and meet outside in the woods. During one of the youth meetings, the gang herd sudden howl followed by the sound of battle. The gang followed the ruckus only to find a dwarf Paladin locked in combat with a werewolf. The rest of the gang fled except for Alexander as he watched on. The werewolf knocked the dwarf down, and disarming him of his silver dagger. As the beast was distracted with the dwarf, Alex grabbed the dagger and plunged it into the beasts hide.
The dwarven paladin, named Ulfgar was impressed with Alex’s strength and courage while Alex found his calling in service to the flame. Ulfgar was able to convince the Alex’s father to travel with him to receive training to become a Paladin of the flame. As a token of further appreciation, Ulfgar forged a blade for Alex to use in his crusade.
Alex upon joining the order was first sent to heavy cavalry but his experience with the lycanthrope latter put him in the monster squad. The squad further resolved his job as paladin as he came into conflict with undead and evil humanoids. As the war ended, Alex sought to look for adventure dealing with the supernatural.
