| Kethka06-30-04, 11:29 AM | My DM is starting a new campaign at an undisclosed date in the future and we are doing organic rolling. Since I was eager to start making my character (and because I'm the slowest person in the group when it comes to character creation) I had the DM go ahead and roll stats for me. I got: STR 13 DEX 9 (re-rolled --> 12) CON 11 INT 17 ( ! ) WIS 13 CHA 17 ( ! ) Great stats for an arcane caster, which is what I was thinking about being. So now I've pretty much decided I want to be the party mage, and be a warmage from the miniatures handbook. However, this is going to be a character I will be using for a long, long time to come, so I definately want him to be more than "just a warmage" so I won't get bored with him. It would be great if I could somehow incorporate my magic talent into my background. For reference, the rest of the party will probably consist of a fighter type (fighter, barbarian, paladin) a divine caster and a stealthy character, so that the party as a whole has a variety of skills and abilities (there are 3 other members). Anyway, back to my original question, I'm looking for ways to make my warmage more interesting. So, any other ideas? I figure you guys are creative enough to give me some help. Anything from background ideas to personality.. whatever you think might add to this character, and thanks in advance for any and all help! (Oh, and if you are wondering, the campaign is homebrew, and it's fairly low-magic -- as in, while mages are not unheard of, they are pretty rare) [Edit: It appears I misunderstood my DM. We aren't going to start off as childhood friends, so I decided to go ahead and make my character middle-aged (Nothing bothers me more than 25 year old arch-mages :nonono: ) |
| Kethka07-01-04, 10:15 AM | Woah - don't everyone reply all at once! :D They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so maybe it's worth a few posts too ;) I found a picture that looked like the sort of character I'd like to play and colored it, and now I'm building my character around it. The picture can be found here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=268426) as soon as the moderators approve it. Maybe that will give someone some ideas? Like where did that scar come from? Does his staff hold any significance? I have a few ideas about him, but I'd like to see what the boards can come up with as well. Just remember, he's only level one, so nothing in his past can be too impressive (but that doesn't mean he has to be boring; he *has* been around for a long time, after all). |
| Trydan07-02-04, 05:25 AM | Hmm... someone didn't reply within a mere 24 hours (Note to self... must update the FAQ  ;)) Ooookay... let's see now. I've no idea what a war-mage is, so some of this may be a bit off. A war-mage is a spell-caster trained for the use of arcane magic in battle. Battle here is probably the key concept. This means: Discipline (follows orders, strict, can handle maneuvers (sp?), etc.) Specialised (either against specific targets - e.g. the Anti-Golem Unit, or as general artillery) Trained (all effort will have gone into training for battle)
So, to introduce some role-playing concepts, imagine a modern soldier unit (a flamethrower unit springs to mind) and apply the differences. Drawing on some stereotypes, it could be something like one of the following:
Desperate defenders, fighting a guerrilla war, with makeshift gear and very rough living conditions Stiff-upper lip, everything in order, pitch your tents in a line and segregate the officers and the lads. Brash and arrogant, no problems with killing allies with friendly fire, scorched earth in the name of <insert some arbitrary cause here> Honour-in-death, suicide unit, willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. etc. So.... for your character, take something like this, and consider how it would affect his day-to-day life. Would he be rigorous about meal-times? Or would he forego a fire, lest it give away his position? Would he drop fireballs into the midst of the battle without caution, or would he snipe from hidden positions with Melf's Acid Arrow, and the Silent Spell feat? Would he cast mage armour on himself, and then wade into battle - half decoy, half berserker. Would he wear a disguise? Or a uniform? What would be standard-issue kit? Would he call out set commands, or engage in banter? E.g. "Oh I say, ol' chap, did you see the way we one-upped the drow? Two-in lobs, and then a splat on the centre-fore, and 'twas all ablaze thereafter and his friends needn't put out an extra cup, I'd say. Crikey, here come some more! Better go, look sharp... Toodles!" And make sure that these things extend outside just the combat sphere of the game. I hope that this helps. I know that you are sort of after a background or something, but I for one found your post somewhat vague. Perhaps using some of the above, you can tune your questions a bit more. Also, check the two links in my .sig - they may also help somewhat in future posts. |
| LiXinjian07-02-04, 09:51 AM | I, too, don't know what a Warmage really is, although the name says much. I'll try to explore grounds Trydan hasn't. Okay, perhaps your character became a mage specializing in battle through circumstances. He just happened to be one of the talented students of a local guild, (but not the best, read on), and he was glad to take up any employment at all to help pay his scholar dues. The local militia/military had need of a wizard at some point, and they hired him for some minor task. Then a few weeks later, they had need of another caster, and went to him again. This little "game" went on for a few months, perhaps a year or two. Before long, your character started focusing on his battle magics. It was, after all, those spells that earned him his bread and butter. He became quite familiar with the military, its leaders and its workings. He was a known face in every local camps. He even had a growing reputation as a handy, capable spellcaster hireling. While he was busy thus, he couldn't help but notice the most talented student of the academy finding promising employment within the ranks of an organization. Your character too would have liked that very much, but sadly, he wasn't talented enough. See, the organization provided for its spellcasters in a way the military didn't: they gave top-notch equipment, handed-out scrolls aplenty and even encouraged spell research with quality labs and well-furnished libraries. Every student wanted to be drafted by said organization because of the prestige and work conditions. But since the organization wanted only one arcane spellcaster, and it was only natural they would go for the best - they had the means to pay, and the repute that allowed them to be picky. Anyway, what was later discovered is that this organization hides behind a civilized facade some evil schemes to take control of the trade (or whatever - I write this with the Zhentarim in mind, but it could fit any evil organization). Slowly, the talented student lost his sense of honour as he worked on the job, warping his morals a bit at a time, until now, when he can be fully considered evil. So the idea is to play on the rivalry between the two students. One has become arrogant and sure of himself, while the other doubts his choices but feels he must stop the former. Of course, the zhent wizard thinks the other student is trying to thwart his efforts because of jealousy.. which isn't entirely false, too, although morals play a greater role. Perhaps your character resents his choices, despises his role as a mere battlemage, but feels he was pushed in that direction by circumstances. Might as well be the best at it, the better to show that arrogant Zhent mage just what he's made of. Whenever possible, your character takes great pride in battling the Zhents in the area, always with the support of the military, of course. See, he drops a few words to his commander about those Zhent activities he heard of and mentions the unit should take action, or simply volunteers for missions and sorties against the Zhents. Soon, he'll be considered a professional anti-Zhent element. He might be asked to lead a battalion into battle against them, or he might be charged with establishing a secret base of operation deep into Zhent territory, harvesting intelligence on the enemy and thwarting their plans. Or conversely, he might try to do the exact opposite, weaseling out of sorties against the Zhents because he's affraid to face the other wizard in battle. If wizards are scarce in your homebrew world, it's only natural they would be in such high-demand IMO. Just some suggestions. |
| Kethka07-02-04, 11:29 AM | Hmm... someone didn't reply within a mere 24 hours (Note to self... must update the FAQ) Oops! Sorry.. I have to admit, I have a bad habit of not reading instructions of any sort unless I have to. Won't let it happen in the future  I've no idea what a war-mage is, so some of this may be a bit off. I suppose I should have been more informative, since it isn't core material after all. A warmage is basically a sorcerer with slightly more hitpoints (d6) and the ability to wear light armor and light shields without arcane spell failure (This is later upgraded to medium, but that's many levels down the road). He also gets a small bonus to damage with spells (his int mod). In exchange, a warmage doesn't get a familiar and his spell list is almost completely pre-selected for him (All of them pretty destructive spells). While this is pretty restrictive, it's great for players (like me) who hate all the bookkeeping normally associated with spellcasters and would rather just jump right into a wizardly character and role-play it. I apologize if my request was too vague, the reason is because I myself don't have a very clear image of this character, and I am trying to create a personality and background without it being too boring or cleche. I like the military mage idea, and it makes alot of sense considering his specialization is destructive magic. The only problem with this path is the question of why is he still level one if he's been on several military campaigns? Unless of course he started late in his life, in which case there would have to be a reason for him to leave. If he was in a military-type position, though, I don't see him as a sniper or specialized support wizard. If for no other reason, then just because he has high mental abilities. I'd think he could be kind of a "figurehead" leader used to raise the troops morale, particularly with his exceptional charisma (Especially in a low magic world - mages would be a rare thing to have in a military unit). Or maybe an advisor type, since he's also intelligent and wise. If I did that, I'd probably pick up a few knowledges to reflect it. I also like the idea of an evil rival mage (especially since I'm planning for this character to be of good alignment). The only problem i that I will be a spontaneous caster, which might not fit in well in a mage school. The idea of a rival mage is a good one though, especially in a low-magic world. Maybe we grew up in the same town as childhood friends maybe? Or even brothers. In that case, it wouldnt be out of the question for the rival to be a sorcerer while my character is a warmage (Both would get their innate casting ability from the same source). The rivalry could develop in much the same way... Both spellcasters need to earn a living. While my mage is basically hired on by the army, my much more talented (read: he can cast more than just destructive magic) brother gets drafted by an evil organization which eventually corrupts him. Kind of a struggle between good and evil mixed with sibling rivalry. And thinking about it, it might be better to play my focus on "war" spells as a deficiency rather than a strength. After all, blind people (from my understanding) learn to devlop their other senses much better, but certainly not to the point where blindness is beneficial. Likewise, I can see a warmage that, for some reason, just can't cast any other kinds of spells no matter how hard he tries. Because if this impairment, he works extra hard on the spells he *can* cast, becoming better than anyone else with them (int bonus to damage), but this edge is still not enough to cover up the fact that as a mage he is still rather lacking (Cant cast fly, knock, shield, or other utility spells). This could lead to him being branded as a second-hand mage, especially by other spellcasters who don't have the same problem. Maybe this would cause my character to envy other mages, or maybe avoid them out of shame. I think this could also lead to some interesting role-play situations, particularly if other wizards were involved. Wow, that was quite a rant. Hope someone took the time to actually read all that :D . I think I'm starting to get a general idea of where I want to go with this character, background-wise. I still need to work on his personality though, maybe strange quirks he might posess or particularly strange opinions. Any thoughts? Comments? |

In real-life, I only know a couple of military personel, but I certainly struggle with my inner conscious when I speak with them and in some ways regard them as just potential murderers. Legal, but only because some law says that they are allowed to kill, while others may not. On the other hand, one could argue that they are a necessary evil - or even a necessary good! Strange... Now, the same can happen to this war-mage. Other mages can regard him as being one who gives their art a bad name. Like a bad opera-singer or an awful painter. This could certainly make for some interesting role-playing, and may force him to keep his magic secret - or at least low-key (in the same way that an off-duty soldier would wear civilian clothes). On the other hand, maybe there is a group of them, that make a point of socialising together, as they are not accepted by anyone else. |

| Kethka07-09-04, 10:53 AM | Alright, it's been a while since I've posted anything, mostly because I've been waiting for my warmage picture to be displayed, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen, so I'll just give a quick description. He (I *still* havent come up with a good name yet!) stands six feet, two inches and weighs approximately 200 pounds. He has long (Down to his lower back) blonde hair and a muscular build. Over his right eye is a long vertical scar, long since healed naturally (Though I havent yet decided the source, he refused to have the scar magically healed, because he didn't want to forget... whatever it is that happened :P ) He carries with him at all times his signature staff. It's a family heirloom that has traditionally been passed down to the first sibling. He recieved it from his mother. Now, a little more about his background.. The DM clued me in that there is an icy waste-land type region to the north and a desert to the distant south, and that I could have my character originate from one of these climates if I preferred, so I decided he would come from the barren north, where his family had lived for two generations in order to make the attempt at a normal life (More on that later). He is the oldest of two siblings (Himself and his brother, who has been corrupted by some evil organization (see above)). He is only older by about six years, but due to the various stresses of war, he appears much older than his age. His family (On his mother's side) has been blessed (Or cursed?) with sorcerous heritage as long as anyone can remember, and further back than any records can reveal. In fact, no one knows why, not even the members of the line themselves. (This will be up the the DM to decide, and my character may find out someday, or maybe not). Though the family is not particularly famous, members have done things in the past that have drawn a lot of attention to themselves (whether intentionally or not), especially in a lower-magic world! While the common man may have heard the name in passing, the only people who might really know anything about the family would be scholars or other spellcasters who study such things. While some of the legends are tales of self-sacrifice and heroism, others are of sorcerers who have used their gift for power and greed. It is these stories which eventually drove my warmage's grandfather to move to the north and live in an isolated community, where he eventually married and had three children (The eldest of which was my mother). Returning to personality... I think that my character's family past would have a great deal of influence in his avoidance of other mages. After all, it's bad enough that as a mage his rather lacking, without expectations being high to begin with. He might even be afraid to 'spoil' his family's good name with his relative magic ineptitude. Thinking about that, I can also see him questing in a sort of attempt to redeem his family name by doing good deeds (Especially if particularly evil things have been done by them in the past... I havent worked out the details yet). In this case, his brother's (powerhungry) agenda would make him the biggest threat to my character's goals. Possible BBEG, perhaps? Wow, that was alot of info. I still don't have any very good ideas on what the staff could do (It has to be something not overpowering for a lvl 1 character, but worthy of a long line of sorcerers). And I havent decided where the scar should come from... his brother maybe? Also, while I have the skeleton of his backstory, it's far from fleshed out, so any ideas in that department would be great. But most importantly, I need a name! Im horrible with names, but if anyone has any good ideas, then please share! :D Any thoughts? Opinions? Comments? |

| cmas311707-12-04, 01:37 PM | The first thing that leaps to mind when I read this thread is that I think you started on the wrong end of the stick. You started with numbers and a very vague idea and then tried to make something that fit. Try answering the following questions from the character's point of view, and I think that you will have a better idea of WHY he is who he is. 1. Why am I on this particular path? (eg. Why does the character follow this partiular course of action?) 2. Why (if I am) am I in the military? (If not, why did I get hooked up with the band that I am in?) 3. What do I hope for in the future? (Is there any chance of advancement within the military or hierarchical structure to which I belong?) 4. Who/what am I loyal to and why? That should give you a good start. |
| Princeoflowlight07-12-04, 10:16 PM | Have there been any recent wars or conflicts in the region where your character came from? If he's not in the military (probably the best route to go, unless the rest of the party is in the same organization), why did he get out so early? Is he a deserter? Was he discharged? Why? A mage of any type isn't your everyday spearman. It takes years and quite a bit of money to train one. A warmage is a relatively large investment, probably moreso than even a knight. Was this paid for by the military he worked for after he was deemed a suitable candidate? Did his parents pay for his schooling, meaning he's from the gentry? Either way, there's certainly a good reason for getting out so early. Is he on the run from the law for desertion? Have his parents disowned him after he quit legally? Both are decent pretexts for an adventurer. Points to ponder. As for names, check out resources with various heads of state (Roman emperors especially) and religious figures (Saints usually have cool names.) |
| Kethka07-13-04, 12:42 PM | Alright, quick update on this character... First, I suppose I should respond to everyone. Well, I already picked a name out for my warmage (Kinda had to, since the campaign started last saturday). But thanks amyway to Tyrdan for the suggestions on names though, since I still have to name a good number of my ancestors :D . cmas, your probably right... I think I *did* start on the wrong side of the stick, but it's a bit late to change that now.. though your questions have still been helpful in defining my character. I also agree with Princeoflowlight that it would be generally disruptive if my character still had a full time job, as it were, and I altered my story a bit to compensate. So, without further ado, here's what I've got so far: His name is "Kelly" Ve'Roth (Kelly is a shortened version of his actual name, which I can't remember at the moment, since my DM has my character sheet.) Family Ve'Roth is a long line of sorcerers, starting some time before recorded history. In my DM's world, there was a "dark ages" like period of time when demons roamed the world, and during that time all written records which could be found were destroyed in an attempt to keep the people ignorant and subserviant. Unfortunately for my character and his family, no one knows exactly why those of the Ve'Roth bloodline are blessed with magic; it could be anything from a long-forgotten favor being repaid by a diety to some sinister, centuries-old plot woven by a very patient arch-devil. But whatever the source of the power is, it follows a very specific pattern of inheritance. The first child of whomever carries the Ve'Roth title is always the one who recieves the power to pass it on to his/her offspring. Meaning that, in Kelly's case, for example, Kelly and his brother both recieved the power from their mother, but if they both had children, only Kelly's would be sorcerous (Since he is the older). Likewise, while Kelly's uncle is innate magical talent, Kelly's cousins do not. (I hope that's not too confusing) Strangely enough, history has shown that if the "carrier" of the Ve'Roth power fails to have any children, then upon his or her death, the power to continue the bloodline will go to the closest eligable relative (A nephew, for example, may inherit it without his knowledge) Obviously, this can sometimes cause problems, with members of the Ve'Roth family getting mattied and changing names and etc. In fact it is speculated by Kelly that family Ve'Roth has probably undergone several name changes over the centuries, making it even more difficult to discern the source of it's strange power. Now that I have that little bit of story out of the way, about my actual character.. Kelly was born in a semi-nomadic northern tribe. This is where his grandfather travelled to in order to escape persecution after his brother, obsessed with necromacy, turned to lichdom and attempted to conquer a small nation using his undead creations. Of course he was defeated, but not without many deaths, and this raised a great deal of distrust for his siblings, who were also mages. Because his grandfather married into the tribe, Kelly is 3/4 barbarian (I say barbarian because people of the far north are very distinctively large and well built... but sicne they have no reason to name themselves, they are just known to the "civilized folk" as the northern barbarians). Due to this, he is very tall and very muscular, and in fact it is not uncommon at all for people to mistake him for a barbarian (the class) in his travels, which can hopefully lead to some interactions with NPCs regarding his role in the party :D . [I created a custom race of variant humans for use with this character, and they can be found here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=272984) , if anyone is interested] Anyway, most of the tribe is illiterate, but Kelly and his brother, Keirdan were educated by their mother, who learned from her father. At around age 20, Kelly's magical powers began to manifest themselves, and he decided to put his gift to good use in defending the tribe. He served in an unoficial "militia" for about ten years, recieving no pay but food, lodging, and the gratitude of the tribe (But that's all he wanted). Keirdan also served for about 5 years until he was offered a position by an organization in the "Northern Kingdom", which is the civilized region of the north (It lies south of the barbarian tribes). He took the offer and travelled away, returning yearly to visit. It was during Keirdan's yearly displays of what he had learned that Kelly became painfully aware of his severe spell-casting impediment, but what caused the two brothers to drift apart was that Keirdan had become in Kelly's eyes far too civilized. He had forsaken the Northern tribe's ways in favor of riches and luxury. And, in addition, he was becoming power-hungry. At the age of 30, Kelly decided it was time to leave the tribe and set off on his own. Not because was dissatisfied, but because he had questions that needed to be answered. Kelly has a very keen interest in history, and studies it whenever he can -- particularly anything he can discover about family Ve'Roth. His immediate goal is to redeem the name of family Ve'Roth, and prove that the line is not evil by nature. He intends to do this by performing good deeds in the name of house Ve'Roth. Another goal of his is to one day redeem his brother, because he certainly does not believe that Keirdan is beyond hope, and could never dream of killing his only brother. Perhaps this could make a good weakness for the character? Especially if Keirdan becomes the BBEG at some point... His ultimate goal, however, and the primary reason he set out, is to discover the true nature of his sorcerous heritage, and the secrets behind it. Whether or not this will ever happen, I don't know... But Kellys sure gonna try! :D . Kelly is fiercely loyal to family Ve'Roth and his homeland (The northern barbarian tribes live on the icy wastes of Folornia). Though he is generally quiet and contemplative (Very odd for someone who looks like he does!), he will not stand idle if one or (God forbid!) both of these things is insulted. Umm... oh, and he follows Boccob, but that's not really significant because he's far from devout. Well, that's what I have so far... I'm sure I left something out, but I think I covered everything important. What does everyone think? Will it work? Comments? Thoughts? I'm always open to new suggestions :) . EDIT: Because it finally got approved, here is Kelly's picture (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=268426) . |
