Class would be helpful. But, it may be a little cliche, but my insane Dwarven Fighter is awesome and a blast to play. Remember, the more incomprehensible the accent the better.

Yes, the Scottish dwarf is the cliche stereotype. Everybody has done a dwarf with a scottish accent to the point many people groan to hear it again. But for a first dwarf, it should be good.

Think "Fat Bastard" from the Austin Powers movies.

The low CHA of a Dwarf works, as does the accent. Be disgusting, and have fun. I'd suggest as low a CHA as possible (if you're a Fighter or Barbarian or any other combat class).

Make up some fun, strange clichés like "By my sister's beard!" and "it's as hot as Moradin's Forge in here!" that only a dwarf would say. Make sure these are said loudly, and with some kind of accent. Be abrasive, and say what you're thinking at any and all times.

As for weapons, try to use something that can also be used as a tool. Axes, Hammers, and Picks are all great choices. Use a Crossbow instead of a Long- or Shortbow since Crossbows can realistically be fired in narrow places with ease.

My suggestion on a build: Fighter/Barbarian levels. Lot's of 'em. Dump your INT stat too. If FRCS is allowed, RoF has a PrC called Dwarven Battlerager -- sweet stuff.

A typical dwarf always repays his debts, be it with coin, toil, or a sharp axe, and he always keeps his word, but remember to clearly mark the difference between "I'm a-gonna kill ya!" spoken in the haze of revenge-induced anger and the "I'm a-gonna kill ya!" spoken in the haze of potent dwarven spirits.

I like playing dwarven clerics too. I do them a little bit differently than the typical brash, loud-mouthed, but loveable dwarven fighter/barbarian types. I see them as being more wise, and given their longer lifespans, taking a fatherly approach to humans and other shorter-lived races. They can get worked up and charge into battle with a great war-cry with the best of them, but they also like to drop quips and well-timed pearls of wisdom as well. I got a bunch off the internet a while back to use with a dwarven fighter/cleric I was playing, but don't remember where I got them. Here are some of the ones I liked best:

Gold doesn't burn.

Grief never killed a spider.

Open-eyed sleep is the gift of rats and warriors.

The dark is too honest for a guilty man.

Surely your heart is made of gold. (Does not refer to generosity, since dwarves don't necessarily value that. It means you're reliable.)

Calling someone soft or soft-minded, or soft-hearted is an insult to a dwarf, and vice versa hard-hearted can be a compliment, but usually said with more tact like "Surely yer heart must 'ave been forged from steel lad!".

After a philospher (or wizard) shakes your hand, count your fingers.

It would be worth a year of vengence. (An oath of vengence is a terribly serious thing for a dwarf, and they will drop everything and pursue it with a zeal that would make the most die-hard of most other races cringe.)

Also, most dwarves are terribly proud of their clans and families, unless they have been exiled from their homes. I had a big paragraph long introduction for my character that detailed great things his clan had done and was known for, and would use it when the occasion called for it. If a dwarf was exiled, he'd probably grow grim and maybe get angry if he was asked about his clan or family.

"Gold doesn't burn."

No, but it melts rather well, as my Dwarf discovered when the ship they were on was burning...and I lost half my gold because we had to abandon ship.

Dwarven battlecries are best made, IMO, on the spur of the moment, suiting the situation. My Dwarf, who just recently officially became a Hammer of Moradin (PrC Fighter class I found on the net), usually charges into battle with "MORAAAADIN!!!"

My Dwarf prefers his hammer, but the other Dwarf in the party, a cleric of Clanggeddin, uses an axe. The cleric occassionally uses phrases in battle which, when the DM has asked what his action is during a combat round, might sound like this:

"Axe him t'go t'sleep." Or somesuch. I can't recall exact phrases, but they're more creative than mine was there.

But beware, DMs like to pick on a Dwarf's serious nature, such as burning off most of his beard, knocking him off a ship into the ocean when he's in full plate armor, and having a newly hatched black dragon think he's it's mother...-sigh-

Some of the battle cries of my dwarf:

I'll split ya like a cord of wood!
Prepare to know what an anvil feels like!
Step aside or i'll step over ya!

If you want to do something differnet make a dwarf who talks with a Swedish accent. You should be able to get some good Muppet Show jokes out of that if nothing else.

He was referring to the Swedish Chef from the Muppets TV show and comparing that to a real accent is like saying Donald Duck sounds like a real duck. Sure would be funny though.

Try playing him completely opposite to the typical dwarf...in the Drizzt novel Sojurn there is a dwarf name Fredegar that is the seneschal for the High Lady of Silverymoon and he is well, slightly femanine...he worries about clothes and cleanliness and etiqutte and is funny as all hell...the best line of that book is where he kills a stone giant by crushing it's skull with his pretty little hammer and while everyone is looking at him in amazement he says "Well, I am a dwarf after all." crosses his arms and gets giant goo on the sleeve of his pristine white shirt and throws a hissy fit...too funny
