I have created a very studious Elven Archivist. He is very into books, loremaster prestige class. I am not one who plays a high intelligence character often (usually Sorcerers or Fighters). This is a high level character (18) and well I am having trouble brain storming something that would keep this character adventuring into epic levels.

I figured if I can find a good reason to keep going, his history will be easier to write. Any character flaws and/or traits that can be given in this would be helpful.

So can you help me with my Elven Archivist/Loremaster, with his history or his ultimate life goal or any of his flaws and/or traits?

Thank you to anyone who helps me with this! :D

Well, the Loremaster PrC is all about finding forgotten lore, so that should be reason enough to keep him adventuring into higher levels. To make it more interesting, I would suggest picking a field of knowledge he is particularly interested in and focus on finding out more about it. Maybe there is a tome on the subject, only one copy in existance, and this character's goal is to find it. Kind of cliche', but well in keeping with the character concept. Your DM should be able to help you with a goal like this, possibly incorporating it into actual game play.

Add to this the character writing down details of things he's seen and experienced (think Volo's Guide to the Realms) along with a healthy dose of archeology and you have every reason to keep going forever :)

What staver said is a good idea :dancingPandaren:
Especially the onlyonedition thing.
Maybe you dont want the book for yourself, but to keep it from others. Maybe said book is The Necronomicon.

Maybe you want to create a library with all of the material plane's knowledge in one place!

There are a few ways to handle it, such as:

1) The book is truly lost, and just needs to be found.

2) The book is in the possession of someone good to neutral, but said being is not eager to share and needs to be found/convinced to share.

3) The book is in the possession of someone evil, and needs to be rescued and the evil destroyed before the knowledge can be used for evil.

Again, kind of cliche, and up to the DM and the rest of the gaming group how to handle it.

How about this a book that was written by one of your ancestors. Your character finds evidence that some book of secret family lore once existed but has been lost and now you are seeking it out to learn more about your families past.

I would think it would be done well if there were clues (National Treasure-esque) or torn out pages that give clues. Just got a brainstorm off of this one.

That would mean the DM would have to divulge information about his setting. I have been trying for about 2 months to learn about places that would have books and places that old to have relics, still waiting. I love the idea but it seems very done to death.

I love the ideas that have been given so far keep em coming!

maybe he wants to find one or all of the big books [book of exalted deeds, vile darkness and one i don't remember] to study or destroy one of them? so that some megavillain doesn't get it and use it to cause some mega evil/good/balancing act

Wants to write a book on all/many monsters, their weakness, combat technique etc for use of brave heroes everywhere.so he researches practically [by fighting them] and aims to encounter/meet as many types [fey, demon, devil] of creatures as possible.Add a background reason for this, maybe some friend/parent/country etc destroyed because they couldn't find attacking monster weakness or combat strategy.Maybe you have co-writers, sage organisations interested in cowriting/getting out this book etc

As far as how to role-play him, you could always take the most "curious" route.

"Ok, when the dragon lands, everyone hit it with all you got!" - party fighter

The large green dragon circles the area looking for a suitable place to land.

"Wow! Look at how he glides through the air." - Archivist

"Get back! Here he comes!" - fighter

The party charges the great beast

"Fascinating! Simply mind-boggling. How does such a large creature maintain flight with such small wings? Come to think of it, I believe I have read something on this issue. Bah, but what book? I remember something about their anatomy being in there...Draco.....Draconom....Draconomic on! Yes, thats it! I'm sure that would be useful about now." - Archivist

"Less talking, more casting!" - fighter

"Oh, right! Spells it is then!" - Archivist

What are some good traits that this character could have?

Ramble in magical jargon. If the DM mentions runes or writing, have your character be drawn to it, even if there's a risk of a glyph or exploding rune.

If your archivist has access to those spells(Exploding rune is a Rune Domain spell), use them in unexpected fashion, like taking a moment while running away to whip up one on a door you shut behind you.

Take a rank or two in Craft: Calligraphy for drawing (or a specific craft skill for drawing) to make illustration of what you've seen.

Examine the dead bodies of the unusual foes you face. Make notes, even to the point of having the other PCs have to call you over.

If you watch or have watched Stargate: SG-1 pay close attention to Samantha Carter and Daniel Jackson.

I ran a high Int cleric of Mystra (Faerun) on this concept, and it was quite fun. :)

Consider carrying around an unusual number of common texts on subjects related to your adventure. See if you can get your DM to give you some minor bonus when you have time to research in exchange for the penalties due to carry capacity. Bug the party warrior to help you lug around your pack so you can read while you travel. Give up spot checks because you are too busy with your nose in a book to pay attention. Carry light sources with and use them so you can read in the dark even if it gives away the party's position.

With some of these you need to be careful not to disrupt the game so when your fellows tell you to turn out the light make sure you listen... just don't think of it yourself.
