Okay, so I've got this war-hardened, cavalier-type general. He's an Aasimar that was raised by a militaristic father, who pretty much forced his son into military service. Being the lawful-type, he followed out of a sense of tradition, and quickly defined himself as a leader.

Now, as a character flaw, I made him arrogant. This didn't jive too well: while we may have been a role-play heavy group, being the group jackass was only fun for a while.

So I negotiated with the DM, and we had him be humiliated in public as he was defeated soundly in a duel. This blow was enough to knock him down to earth.

The problem is: I'm not sure how to redefine this character. I was going to go with another trait: patriot, but this might get annoying as well. Any ideas as to where I can develop him?

Well...

After the defeat he is now a little unsure about his former beliefs so he begins a philosopical quest of self-discovery...

"I was wrong because I was so proud about my outsider blood? Is really that the way a man must be measured? And how about Social Classes, is no noble more valuable than a peasant? "

So he is slowly becoming a philosopher like type, he looks for knowledge, he knows feels the urge to know the "Why" instead of just being a "I know I am the best because I was born ..."

While I am changing his personality, I still want the group to recognize him as General Codos Iberas (his name). Philosopher sounds kind of soft for a war-hardened general.

Thanks, though!

Part of being a good leader is knowing when to be humble and when to arrogant ect...Perhaps this is the event that makes him begin to realize that.

"Know thy enemy, and know thyself." Right now, he doesn't know himself. I can see him taking a step back to analyze his own attitudes and positions in a similar matter to a tactician whose grand strategy has failed. He knows he needs a new way forward and that sticking to the old path is a recipe for defeat. He may wish to consult experts on the best way to deal with the situation, or coldly and rationally assess what went wrong, the difference between expectation and reality, and adjust his expectations accordingly.

Maybe some Stoic philosophy would help:

Marcus Aurelius would be a fun person to model that kind of character on.

Well, I was basing this character off of Caesar (sort of) so, yeah, I think this will work.

Thanks! Got a game tomorrow, and I'll run this guy to see if it works!
