In a game I'm playing in, the DM asks the players to name any magic items that have a +3 or higher total bonus. I have a +1 Holy bow and a +1 Animated Darkwood shield. My character is basically a cleric archer, but with a more woodland bent. His class levels are Ranger 2/Clr 5/Master of the Yuirwood 4. The campaign is set on an alternate Earth around the year 1400 AD. The gods from various regions at some point in the past decided to create their ideal races, and the city of Judea was destroyed before the expansion of Judaism, therefore neither Judaism or Christianity ever developed. The Greek/Roman Pantheon created elves.

My character is a half-elf cleric of Artemis, who calls himself a Huntsman of Artemis. The Roman civilization was destroyed some 1,000 years ago and only small remnants and scattered bands of elves and half-elves are left from it, with the worship of their gods also falling off. I was thinking of calling the shield an Archer's Shield and saying that they were used by some lost regiment of Roman archers so that they could protect themselves from enemy archers and still be free to use their bows. I have no idea what to call the bow. I stink at coming up with names.

Any of you more creative types want to help out? Latin is the common tongue, and my character started out in northern Africa, so other languages common to the area are Egyptian, Phonecian, etc. The name could be something my character came up with, or a name given to the bow by someone else. I started at 11th level, so I don't have a story as to how he got any of his equipment.

How about Hostis Terminus (Foe's end). Or Ira Dianae (Diana's Fury, Diana being the Roman name of Artemis). I don't remember too much latin (I just have my First year latin textbook with me), and I never knew egyptian or phonecian (but I might know someone who does know some egyptian, hmmm...). Well good luck.

I like Ira Dianae. Since the character started out as a ranger first, then became a cleric, I was thinking about how he might have been inspired to become a cleric, especially of what is basically a dying religion. I'm thinking he could have started out as a poor street urchin, and began wandering into the desert because he liked the peace away from the city, and also the danger of it thrilled him a bit. I thought it might be cool for him to have found the old corpse of another cleric of Artemis. She could have had a journal on her describing her life in the service of the Huntress and the Roman Legion, and it could have been the thing to have taken his mind off of his wretched life and inspired him to become more than what seemed written as his Fate. Heck, I might see if I can come up with a name for the cleric and name the bow after her.

Elves and half-elves still rule in some places, but they are seldom liked even there. In other places they are scorned and treated as second class citizens. The people still remember the encroaching Roman armies conquering all the surrounding lands and ruling them not so gently. I'm thinking maybe the tales of Rome's granduer in the journal and how the elves used to hold themselves above all others might have gone to his head a bit. Things in last weeks game seem like they could push him towards feeling like he should seek out the ruins of Rome and find out what happened to it, and maybe even see if he can be an instrument in it's restoration to glory. Dreams like that will put him at odds with some NPC factions for sure and maybe party members too, but I'm thinking he's wise and patient enough to not tip his hand yet.

As for the shield, since it's made of darkwood and it's animated I think Niger Socius (Black Ally) or Niger Amicus (Black Friend) would be fitting. These are male, female are Nigra Socia/Amica and genderless are Nigrum Socium/Amicum.
