I've recently undertook playing a Swashbuckler core class character found here. (http://www.silven.com/adnd.asp?case=show&id=78) However, I actually lack ..well, swashbuckler nuances and superstitions. I wondered if the board would help me out some by listing a few things I might do/say as a swashbuckler?

I'm still working on a background for the character and as yet am somewhat stuck as to why a sailor/swashbuckler would be on dryland for extended periods of time. I did take ranks in Profession (Sailor) and Craft (Scrimshaw) but other than working at the craft during meals/camping etc I'm not certain on how to incorporate them into the character while she's adventuring on land...which is where 90% of the game will be held. lol :) That'll teach me to pick a character based on a
miniature. (http://www.reapermini.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=520&cat=&xid=def1ab47082a9efd9765f59db6982208)

(And I plan on seeing Pirates of the Carribean again tomorrow ..but I enjoyed the movie so much that it's hard to take mental notes on how to actually play character like Jack Sparrow. :D )

Any help is appreciated :D

Check out the links at that site for some great swashbuckling-type reads for free!

Many of the links point to another website: Project Gutenberg. If you haven't seen this, you've gotta!

Well, as for the reasons he's on dry land:
1) Maybe he slept with the capitain's wife and now capitain's got a contract on his head?
2) Tried to steal some treasure from the capitain and now the capitain has a contract on his head?
3) Maybe he tried to take over the capitain's place as capitain?
4) Maybe he's trying to make some money really fast to pay a debt to another pirate?
5) Trying to make money to buy his own ship and have his own crew?
6) Maybe he heard of somebody in the countryside that might know something about a hidden treasure the character has spent sometime looking for?
7) Maybe he was challenged to a duel but he was tipped of by his best friend that his opponent was gonna cheat and that he had no chance at all and ended up running away?

"Princess Bride" one of the best swashbuckling characters EVER!!

The whole trick to being a swashbuckler is to always have a witty line to throw out there. The more rediculously confident the better.

Reasons for being on land?
Maybe he violated some kind of pirating code, and has been blacklisted from all seafaring vessels until he makes ammends (probably a large cash donation)

His ship was destroyed (a storm, another ship, a sea monster etc) and perhaps they are seen as bad luck, being the only survivor of an unsurvivable encounter

Good luck with the swashbuckler. I am sure that you will really enjoy playing one, they are one of my favorites.

Dunno why couldn't remember of this before but have you ever play the "Monkey Island" game series? It's a source of both pirating and swashbuckling lines. Try to google it. :)

You can have him skrimshaw the handle of his sword, or a pices of whalebone that he is carving into utensils (fork, spoon, etc.). If you're DM allows smokepowder weapons, he could have a scrimshawed smoke powder horn, and the handles of his pistols could be done as well.

Be sure to use a lot of nautical terms in your characters speech as well.
-leagues for describing distance
-knots for speed
-fathom for depth
-You might even look up the navy names for watch changes that happen at different times. 9 o'clock might be called three bells or somesuch.
-use "port" for left and "starboard" for right
-"head" is the bathroom, etc.

"If there was a school for swashbuckling, I think that one of the lessons would be Laughing, and then jumping of stuff".

A miquote, from "Deep thoughts by Jack Handely"...

Bump in honor of Talk like a Pirate day and an update on my character. :D

I've had the best time ever playing this gal. I've been using Silven Road's swashbuckler core class found here. (http://www.silven.com/adnd.asp?case=show&id=78)

Anyhoo, I highly reccomend playing a swashbuckler. It's a lot of fun. :tiphat:

Er... a bit off topic, but Domni Dalrose, shouldn't that be "parry" in your signature, rather than "perry"?
