Not complete in the sense that I know what they had for breakfast every day of their life, but a list of all the important things that happened in their past, their feelings then and now towards them, and how they responded then and whether they regret it or feel justified in their actions. It helps me get a firm grasp on their personality before going into any sort of character roleplay. Sometimes this can still leave you a bit vague as to some actions or reactions a character might have, so i usually try to think of what character that I know well from a movie or book that MY character is most like. Kind of like WWJD, except in my case it's usually not so altruistic or good-natured. If I'm a lawful evil character bound in a hierarchy, how would Vader react? I've got a character that's similar in temperament to Batman, and so if I ever get into a quandary, I just ask myself what would the Caped Crusader do in this situation? The biggest thing, of course, is just doing it. Get the experience under your belt, actually try, stay open-minded, and you'll keep getting better at it the more you do. But you got to keep that open mind. I've played with some people that just didn't care, so they never got better. |

For example, you could be a sort of merry trickster type, always knowing and telling the best jokes, laughing, and generally being very extraverted. In some sense, you don't try to hide the fact that you're not trustworthy or honorable -- but in a way, that only makes people trust you more (if they have low sense motive), because when you tell them a story about how you lied and conned your way past some guards or whatever, they feel like they've been let into some sort of inner circle -- that you may be a liar to most people, but they're special, and they can trust you. Alternatively, you could be a more Tartuffe-type character: feigning obsessive piety. Maybe wear a holy symbol of the Silver Flame or something, and constantly preach vocally against nasty con artists, and especially those changelings who abuse their powers to trick honest, hard-working folk. Or you could just be a consummate professional spy. Quiet, unassuming, doesn't really stand out in a crowd. No one notices you. You fit into any social situation, and no one thinks "should this guy really be here?" because you just don't make much of an impression. You slip away with secrets, or have slipped some rumor into society, without anyone having noticed. |
