My PC in d20 Modern (modified Cyberave campaign set in 2071) is a Chinese female from Hong Kong who's been in the Dallas area since age 14, and is now 23. Part of her history is that at age 20 or so she was a police intern, when an ex-boyfriend of hers helped people who he thought was the FBI "arrest" her, but they turned out to be... something else. They extensively modified her with cybernetics, then addicted her to some drugs to maintain control of her, and they used her to covertly enter business and steal information and hardware.

The difficulty I have is- why her? What reason could I give that the criminal boss chose my PC for this? What attracted their attention to her?

why her... lemme see.

well, her parents were ancients so they have controlled her inorder to keep the balance of the world normal. if all ancients die than nobody can live for your pc holds a unique power that controls nature and if she dies the world will end with everybody die in a fire storm.

yeah thats all i could come up with right now but maybe som later

v.1
She have high (obvious to everyone) CON, INT and CHA, but low WIS. So she can easyly withstand ordeal of being drugged, cybernetized and brainwashed at the same time and weak-willed enough to control her.
v.2
She had some cyberware and experimented with (I don't know proper word, so I borrow one from CP2020) netrunning, where she was noticed by criminals as talented target.
Just my two creds ;)

Wow... your option 1 is pretty much exactly her situation- CON and INT 16, CHA 18, but WIS 10. So, let's go with that. Now, how did she come to their attention in the first place? How did they know about her and conclude she would be a candidate for what they intended?

And lylac... we don't have that kind of stuff in our Modern game. Think more The Crow and Underworld plus Neuromancer all baked together in a casserole. :D

She was smart, able to take a hit or two and dish it back out, quickly adaptable to any situation she was given, and could usually just social engineer her way past those that stood in her way.

Even in training, she had the uncanny ability to make people stand up an notice. Set the class record for holding her breath, and the 17-mile run. Wasn't the strongest, but was the most versatile, and the most easily controlled. She was the clear choice even after the first month.

Shaping up better. Part of the story involves management over her (a Lieutenant or a Captain most likely) being complicit somehow in the situation- he would be in a perfect position to note her abilities (and weaknesses) and pass that on to his criminal partners. :)
