| Kyle_the_DM11-18-05, 01:26 AM | Hey, My character has two levels of fighter and the group knows that I'm a fairly straight forward meat shield. Now that we all just reached level three, I've added a level of sorcerer. I plan for my character to become a spellsword eventually but I'm a little unsure about how go about suddenly having the ability to use sorcery. The characters have only known each other for three days and we've only fought about six battles. Our leveling up was a DM thing in order to progress into the story faster. I was thinking on explaining it by just saying that I've been practicing for a while and I'm only now perfecting it to usability. Any other ideas? Thanks, Kyle |

Play the next little while with yor character practising their new spells/abiliites whenever your party has down time. Since you are going to be a spellsword I am guessing your spells will be combat realted - considering the 6 fights in three days manisfesting abilities that make you a better/different type of combatant is not a bad concept. Mentioning that you had an ancestor/ older realtive who also displayed magical talents such as these would also help explain your manisfestation. |

He might also be afraid of the reaction of the outworld (a witch, a witch!). You could reflect this mechanicaly by having him take cross-class skills to his old fighter skills for instance. This might eventualy leed to him accepting this new gift, and combining it with his fighting prowess, resulting in a spellsword. Also remember the spell casting failure, that your character might not be aware of. "Sometimes my spells work, but sometimes they fizzle without reason!" |

| Kyle_the_DM11-19-05, 09:48 PM | I never thought of playing the "why are my spells failing?" aspect of becoming a sorcerer. I like it. I go with the explanation that the intense stress has brought out my abilities and I don't know much about spell failure and the like. All of the spells I've planned on taking are spells that effect myself except for two, magic missile and orb of force. These are going to be my channeled spells as well as the only damaging spells I use. The DM has created a very "dragon influenced" world for us so later on my character will prbably learn that sorcerers have dragon blood. Maybe I'll have the DM use this as a side quest kind of thing. Thanks a lot for all of the ideas. I really like them. |
| Warslayngawds11-24-05, 01:00 AM | Given the heavy "Dragon" influence over the world, think about Dragon Disciple as well. One campaign I ran for a long time had an Elven Fighter5/Sorcerer6/Spellsword2/DragonDisciple2 in it(complimented by a lvl 15 Monk and a lvl 14 Sorcerer neither with any multiclassing) She often struggled with her role in combat and the group, but eventuall found her place as the groups center point. All the other members could freely move around her during a combat, while she used her swords and spells to baffle and confuse her opponents. All the while she was exploring her draconic heritage and wrestling with her own personal demons(alignment started at CN and through association with the LG monk eventually turned to CG). The great part of it was that all of the characters advanced both the storyline and they're own development over the course of a four year campaign. Just an idea. |

| Kyle_the_DM11-30-05, 12:12 PM | I tried fiddling around with Dragon Disciple but in the end I felt like I needed the caster levels instead. I made two excel sheets for level progression and depending on how the game flows I might just give up the spells and take Dragon Disciple for flavor. One of the group member's character hates dragons and I think he's planning on becoming a Dragonslayer; which should make for some cool roleplaying. I really like the idea of awakening magic through battleing spellcasters. I've included that into my characters background. Thanks for the help everyone, I'll be sure to update when I decide on Dragon Disciple or not. |
