I have a problem: I want to do a druid for my next campaign, but some other players don't want me to do it, because they say I will be a bother. They insist the druid is a stupid class because he/she only wants to be in nature, won't enter a town when the rest of the party do and won't allow any harm to nature (for example, he/she won't let them to hunt animals to eat, or cut branches of a tree to do arrows, or cut off a tree to make a battering ram, or will not allow the wizard to make a spell that would hurt the forest...). I insist the druid don't have to be like that, but they don't change their minds.

Who is right?

young druid the answer is simple... pray. a druid is not only a defender of nature but part of it. pray and ask nature to grant you the strength to succeed in your quest. (ie. if you need to eat, pray that the soul of the animal will become part of you and aid you in you cause.) so if you truely have the desire to embark on the path of the druid expect to pray... alot.

Worship Mielikki, She believes in the Balance of Civilazation and the Wild. And Druids do enter towns. They will let people kill animals to eat. but not sport hunting. As for the Battering ram thing if trees were plentiful i would think so. Only the extreme of the extreme druids would be the type your group is thinking about.

Unless there are "house rules" going on that I dont know about, a Druid can be anything you want them to be. They TEND to defend nature. They TEND to prefer the forest to the city. they TEND to do alot of things. But there's no reason you HAVE to be the ultra-liberal, goody-goody, tree huggin', smelly ash hippie druid. Be who and what you want and just be sure to tell everyone you wont do any of the things they think will be offending. ANY wise druid would know that Nature provides and there should be a balance. So arrows, battering rams, houses, heck even a fireball that burns part of the forest is ok (fire can be cleansing and renewing).

Druid's are not only the protectors of nature, but part of her as well. Thus they can put her resources to use like an animal would, eating other animals would be fine, and some animals do utilize tools of nature. Basically what that means is that as long as you don't take to much from nature you'll be fine.
That said, druids are the protectors of nature, and thus they will go wherever they are needed to fight nature's foes, from dungeons to towns, to any where.
The last thing is that nature is everywhere, even cities have their own ecosystem, so you can never truly leave nature (at least on the prime material plane).
That's my take on the druid any way.

Actually, I once introduced a kobold sewer druid in my campaign. He was the shaman for his people who lived in the sewers and had a Dire Rat as an animal companion.

It's just how creative you want to be with a druid. Anything is possible.

Maybe you can be an Urban Druid or Metal Master, they're more adapted to th e big city.

You can't live in nature without 'harming' it (it's not actually harming, it keeps nature in balance): everybody HAS to eat : in the woods it's either fruit or meat. You can't spend you're entire life in the woods eating dirt.

Everything has a reason of be: the grass is there to feed the deer, the deer is there to feed the wolves, the wolves eat the deer's meat and let the rest for the vulture. But remember: the deer is also there to feed humans. You could believe that the raw metal is there to be worked by humans and dwarves, some trees could be cutted to produce beautiful things. Anyway, when the trees get bigger, smaller trees will die, missing both light & nutriments; so it's better to cut them down in order to produce beautiful wooden tools, weapons or furnitures.

Cities: Druids think they are unnatural and a waste of space, but they have no problem with being there with the rest of the party.
Hunting: Hunting for food is natural, hunting for sport gets you on the tingly end of an Extended Creeping Cold.
Tools: Taking off a branch and using most of it to make arrows, orusing the bulk of a tree to make a ram are OK because the material is being reused and not wasted. Chopping down a redwood for a toothpick gets you Creeping Doom in your underwear.
Magic: The druid will try to save the forest from a pointless Fireball spree, but is willing to let some damage come up if for a worhtwhile cause, like stopping an advancing undead horde or torch-wielding orcs.

Yes, the druid has standards. That doesn't make the druid an extremist though.

Hey, my newest character is an druid who is actually an apprentice groundskeeper of the famous inn, the Whistling Stag of Quearvarr who happens to worship Mielikki. (backstory and all)

Choose your ideas of nature from your racial standpoint as well...
