I am starting a new campaign and need help fleshing out a character. He is a ng human fighter named Barsen and he is an orphan who up until recently has lived on a small island that's main purpose is a small stop for ships on the trade route which exists between two much larger islands. He joined the crew of a trade vessel which was then attacked by pirates. He managed to escape on a life boat and make his way to the mainland. He then fell in on the wrong side of the law doing mercenary work for gangs. He is currently unemployed after his last group of employers were arrested.

Does he feel ashamed about doing the dirty work of mercenaries or does he rather enjoy it? Perhaps they were a bad influence on him and he is becoming more neutral? Or perhaps the reason he has come to the end of his time working for these mercenaries is that they offended his moral code and he could stand it no longer? If he spent all this time in a small fishing community is he fairly "country-ish" with antiquated speech and a practical mind or is he more at home in the cities? What is his style of fighting? Does he have a moral code and refuse to take advantage of a downed opponent etc or will he use any methods to defeat his foes? Why would he start adventuring? He could just use the money, maybe the group of other PC's has a reputation for heroics and he fancies himself as one as well (after all, the heroic status helps with getting the ladies!). Is he religeous at all? A devout fighter who is very respectful and submissive to the priest could be interesting, as could a cynical one who is forced to rethink his opinions after being raised from the dead.

Hope that gives you some ideas

Why is he an orphan? Did his parents die from a plague? Make him paranoļac about diseases! Killed by [enter the monster name here]? Make him a [enter the monster name here] hunter!

Who raised him? An uncle, a neighboor, the local temple?
