| BAD_SAMARITAN02-10-05, 02:29 AM | ..I NEED HELP. Delemma- I just started playing recently, so im the newb of our dnd group. Ive only played a few times and I want to impress the group with my character.. my last character was pretty decent, a rogue, but hes dead, along our entire first party.. So now im making a Sorcerer. No one in the group wants to help me create him or give me pointers, yadda yadda- i was thinking of focusing his powers around acid, and possibly force? I was hoping you guys could help me give him Flavor, im really bad with naming, and i need a good story, so far all i know is what i want to focus his powers on.. of if you guys could make suggestions for the following bit of stuff that would be appreciated too! i saw in the complete arcane that there are a handful of new (fire, ice, elec., acid) spells to help that route.. This Will be a 3rd Level Character Human heres what i have for my ability rolls - 9 12 12 14 17 18 so i was thinking STR 9 DEX 14* CON 17 INT 12* WIS 12 CHA 18 *possibly switch thoes 2 stats? spell selection 7 - 0level and 6 1stlevel what do you guys reccomend for spells? Feats? need help here as well... lastly equipment? 2800 gp to work with, magic items are fine if approved by our DM. oh and i almost forgot a familiar.. does it really matter which you choose besides some can fly and the bonus to skill checks? Thank you All for any and all help, Joshua. |

I will give a few suggestions about how you got your powers, of course their are many more options but this is a start. The most well known: Dragon Ancestory You have dragonblood running through your veins. You inherited the magical powers. (some dragons have affinity for acid) The most feared: A pact with the devil You have made an pact with the devil to receive your sorcerous powers. But hey the devil would not be the devil if he didn't want anything in return. You should discuss the pact with your DM so you both know what it involves). The most natural: Fey-touched You received your gift for magic from nature. You've alway been close to nature and the woodland-beings have blessed you with magical talents. The most easy: Unknown origan You are born with your magical talents and take them for granted. You're not interested in finding out how you got your powers. You just have them, and your are very familiar with them. It is the most normal thing in the world to you. Sometimes you do not realize that others don't have these powers (What do you say? You can't fly? Just jump up and just don't jump down) The most strange: Something stranged happened and suddenly you had magical powers. You were struck by lightning and it didn't hurt you at all. Ever since that day you can releash electrical energy at will (fun when shaking hands). Your hair always stands straight up since that day. Or some other strange event happened to you. Stats: It seems to me that you have your stats right. Familiars: Just choose a familiar that you like. I like cats personally, so my wizards and sorcerers all have cat familiars. Feats: echew materials is great (what are sorcerers doing with material components anyway?). Maybe some feats to boost your saves or AC. Metamagic feats are of less use to a sorcerer. Spells: It is always great to have a theme. Your theme seems to be acid. Themes are fun, but it is also a weakness. Make sure you can do something against those guys that are immune to acid (some spells to boost your teammates?). Melf's Acid Arrow is a must ofcourse. Ask your DM to allow you to change some spells so that they deal acid damage instead of their normal type of damage. Well that was enough writing for today. I hope I didn't make to many spelling errors. I hope that this helps. |
| Trydan02-10-05, 11:53 AM | Don't forget... SPELL RESEARCH. Basically, it means that by working with your DM, you can attempt to develop new spells. These may be through study (like a wizard) or through some sort of natural ability, that you simply practice, to try to coax it out of its dormant state. However, what I do suggest is that you get hold of an electronic copy of the spell list (for example, from the SRD), pick a concept and search for it. It should give you a list from which to start, and thereby branch out into new unexplored territory. (PS: If you want some ideas for "acid" magic, then take a look at the example character "Dietrich" in the "How to create a role-playing character" article... the link is in my .signature). |
| Morka02-10-05, 03:35 PM | The two links in Trydan signature are excellent. The two first in mine are good ones to in order to help you find some flavor. A good one is the sorcerer with dragon blood, thinking that the dragon blood actually dilute his power... Start to think about a familly background. Who's your mother? Who's your father? I mean, your true father. Because your mother could have had an adventure with some menestrel, and you inherited his magical power. On the other side, you could as well come from a familly of sorcerers, and think you are better than the others because of that (think about the Malefoy familly in Harry Potter). Now add a few brother/sisters, uncles, cousins, etc, what they think about you and what you think about them. Now, are you in love with someone? If you're from the "Noble Blood" familly, could she even think about driving you back? |
| informant11802-16-05, 10:39 AM | i like the idea of making a deal with the devil. i think that would be awesome, say if like you had a childhood friend and one day he started to use magic and didn't know how, then you became jelous(jelousy is the best to rollplay) and made a deal with a devil/demon/something evil because you wanted them too or you could do it like you heard of people who could bring the dead back and heal people all your life and then one day your family was killed in a raid and you couldn't help them because you had no magic, so you make a deal with someone(who turns out to be evil) to give you the power to bring your family back, however they didn't come back quite like you remembered them, or something like that, i really like playing the downfall of characters. |
