| tmmp04-16-07, 09:28 PM | Hello all; my local dm is getting ready to start up a borderlands campaign and i could use some help with my character concept and build. We start at 3rd level and are gestalt. I've already asked him about getting caster level above my actual level and its alright so long as i don't get to far ahead. anyway my current build is this. wizard 3/ half elf paragon 1 human paragon 2 these two classes are in the unearthed arcana classes. I'd like my character to have been born into slavery to one of the drow houses, perhaps in Menzoberranzan i believe the city is called? Later i was in service to my owner and a group of dwarfs assaulted us taking me and any other slaves still alive as their own. From there i was thinking to somehow end up in skull port where a brave group of adventures inadvertently save me from my fate; allowing me to be a free soul. My next post will have a few more ideas as i am familiarizing myself with skull port and the Underdark city i mentioned who's name I'm sure i spelled wrong. |

And it's not that reasonable to have your character be a wizard while a slave, unless he has only just started learning magic since being freed. |

If his owner was a wizard, he might have studied on his own, while cleaning the owners library, reading one chapter each day, and secretly exercising when no-one was watching... He then used his magic to do his work faster, resulting in a "promotion", and he got some kind of mark to show that he was a good, fast-working slave. When the dwarfs attacked, they noticed the mark, and decided to spare him, since he apparently was a good worker. However, since he no longer had a chance to study and exercise magic, he had to actually do his work himself, and he did not do it fast enough for the dwarfs, so they sold him to a merchant, who brought him to Skull port. That is the best way for me to make it work, what do you think? |

Mages need magic-trained assistants and so might train slaves deemed reliable. The question more would be what sort of attitude do you want the PC to have. If you want him to hate drow, the learn by sneak idea works fairly well. If he is to be in some degree "friendly", a version of "favored slave", you can go with a fairly normal apprentice idea. To be developed is the parents here. We have drow and human? Who were they? Our slave may not know, but the background should say. We can put in a variety of possible hooks here. Presumably we have drow male and human female, but the reverse is possible. If we go with ignorance, the PC should be eager to find out who the parents are. A task that is likely quite impossible, but it gives him a reason to go here or there to follow "clues". The "trip" to Skullport also needs some work. He doesn't have any obvious reason to be in human territory. Now one idea is that the adventurers are aware of a "princess" who vanished under conditions that might have been slavery by drow, and who had no heir. The PC matches the princess to some degree and has a few hints about "Ma" that might fit the princess. So they haul him to Skullport, where it is found that he is not related to the princess, and is thus abandoned in the human city. [for hooks, it would be "proved" that he was not the missing heir, but those who now have his property are aware an unbribed court might rule differently, and thus are hidden enemies of his that keep his life "interesting".] |
