I have a ranger who I am currently playing in a campaign and have no idea how to play them. So far, they started out as half elf, and through dying and being brought back, found themselves in a new body which is that of a full blooded human.

So, I'm looking for ideas on a personality/character quirks.

We're playing in the Eberron setting, so I was thinking he was a veteran from the wars or something?

I always like the 'angry at the world' archetype for these kinds of characters. For Rangers that works out pretty well with the favored enemy thing. If you're the only one with Survival you can always go with the 'I'm better than you guys and I don't know why you're still alive' to the party when you're in the wilderness and they need to rely on you.

Elves are naturally linked to the forest. Your character was aware of this from his half elven blood before reincarnation. I think he would feel some sort of loss for no longer having that inherent/genetic communion with nature. I think that his career as a ranger would be marked with an attempt to return to that bond. To reclaim that which was lost, is a noble and inspiring goal for a character. It may even lead him to delve deeper into the mysteries of the wild and cross over into druid if that is of your liking.

This character cringes when his new found human feet snap a twig that his half-elven grace would have allowed him to glide over effortlessly. He is sure that the gods or powers that be caused him to be reincarnated in this form for some purpose, but he can't imagine what that is as it seems less suited to his skills than his previous one.

I would start with that motivation and work from there. Hope it helps.

Personally... if that happened to me... id be freaken out like all hell.

Think about it, origionally your part of this race that can live for 100+ years... then you get chucked into this body that is going to die a quarter of a century before that... its pretty damn freaky.

Id have the character do everything with a great sense of urgency... act like time is running out and youve got a looooooong list of things to do.

You could have him looking for a new body aswell... perhaps try and get raised again as an elf.. that would be even better than a half elf.

Hope this helps some.

good ideas. thanks! I previously played a cleric in this campaign also with a bit of a hot streak with domains death and destruction who was self hating ... and emo. Then we cut our ranks in half and i kept the ranger. So i was looking for something equally fun and quirky with this character also. Nothing better than pulling a kavorkian with a cleric. "It was assisted suicide!" "You FORCED him to drink poison! How's that assisted suicide?!?" "... He wanted to die?" "Yeah, after you beat the hell out of him!"

Heh, good times. Anyways. Still looking for something fun and quirky for the character that i can really get in to, you know?

Good ideas on the half elf now human thing, it makes sense.
