Hey i'm just starting with D&D but am thinking of starting with an Elven Ranger (keeping it simple to start) and have all my information picked out but have to buy a dice kit b4 i figure out all my stats. Does anyone have any general advice?

I like rangers, and they're good for starting people. You make a few choices, which are largely roleplaying based, and you're set!

Most elven rangers obviously go with the ranged combat style... so, you'll want to get all the feats that branch off of the Point Blank Shot feat tree, except maybe Shot on the Run. Two Weapon Fighting and Weapon Finesse - Shortsword are also good choices for when you get into melee, but Precise Shot (and its prereq Point Blank Shot) is a must, so get that first.

For stats, Dex is probably your most important, followed by Strength (more damage with a mighty composite longbow). Then, Wis or Con, depending on your playing style (do you plan to go into melee at all, or are you going to be strictly ranged?). Next is Int, with Cha being your "dump" stat. Hey, you're great looking, just really standoffish!

Other than that, develop a good, but simple story, and roleplay it well. And remember, no matter how good you get: roleplaying... then powergaming.

The most important thing is to listen to the more experienced players and ask for their halp often, especially when it comes to picking skills and feat for you character (ask advice but don't let them do it for you). There's nothing more annoying than a rogue without the skills the party needs. (What do you mean you don't have any ranks in Disable Device!? This trap needs disarming! )

Other than that, just play whatever character appeals to you (be sure to have an interesting background). Maybe you're the kind of person who is going to really like spell casters but the other players force you to be a fighter or barbarian becuase they're easier. You don't want to be turned off by having to play a class that you don't like.

as my sig says

no matter what happens dont flinch

the first character is always the hardest to role play but wit some time and not even a good backround story will create a charecter

first i would (trying as hard as possible not to sound like English teacher) brainstorm some concepts i personnaly like the criminal who kills of the barons underlings if they enter the woods persona especialy if you run c-g as your alighnmen or the elite scout from the military unit that was destroyed so you wander around lookin for work

Another fun thing to do with a ranger is to become a bounty hunter. Unfortunatly this will need some Prestige Classes to make it work really good.

If you want more advice on creating the background, etc for your 'roleplaying character', check this thread: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=105563&page=1&pp=30

I'm pretty sure GW will not allow you to play D&D in their shops. GW shops are made to sell and promote the stuff GW releases, not the stuff WotC (their concurrent) releases.
