I'm planning on playing a shadowbane stalker in an upcoming campaign. Race will be whisper gnome. They have a -2 to Cha, and instead of playing him as the quiet sullen type, I want to play him as the Paranoid and Untrusting type.

He'll be starting out Rogue and then move into Cleric to meet the prerequisites for Shadowbane Stalker, which also requires a Lawful Good Alignment.

I was thinking for a background some sort of informant. Perhaps has ties with a crime syndicate or something. I also wanted him to still be able to use sleight of hand to pick-pocket (from evil-doers of course), although this would probably not work so well with being Lawful. (I figure I can have the move or start the move from whatever alignment his background shows into Lawful Good before we start, to make things easier to get into the PrC.)

The sleight of hand is not that big of a deal though.

As far as combat is concerned he will likely be trying to hide and stay out of it. Once he picks up levels in Cleric he will likely be self-buffing.

Anyone have any ideas for quirks and such that play well to the paranoid type? Also what skills/skill tricks/feats would you suggest?
Finally Deity suggestions? (with the Travel domain would be ideal)

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas. If I didn't give enough information let me know I'll try to put up more.

Interesting start.

Sleight of hand can not only remove objects but also place them. Makes a great dirty cop trick if you wanna go member of the law of wrongs side of. Have you considered undercover work? Lets you use both aspects of SoH, that is gathering and planting evidence.

God is fairly easy though dependent on campaign. Use Farlanghan/Shaundakul.

If you want a real BG your gonna need to know where you come from. Both in the physical and maturing aspects. What kind of guy grew up to be you and where was he when it happened?

So, you want ideas for how to both play this gnome and what sort of skills and feats he should get? Well, Alertness and Dodge might make sense; he'd want to be aware of his surroundings because of his paranoia, and Dodge is usually good for sneaky sorts.

His lawful alignment could come from great self-discipline, and the good may be his motivation to help others, even if he's not personable. Taking items from evil doers via Sleight of Hand and putting them back where they belong isn't too chaotic; as long as other aspects of his character are lawful, it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the helpful tips! Especially on playing the Sleight of Hand and the Alignment.

As far as background, I believe our DM is going to be setting us in Eberron, which I am quite unfamiliar with. However, from what I do know of it there are likely to be many opportunities for some fun and different roleplay. He has talked about starting out our first session by having us roll everything. So I don't know if he is going to have us roll for age, height, and weight, or even gold. [I should probably ask]

I've been thinking of him as kind of a double agent of sorts. (Probably been watching too much ALIAS) Since he has a natural knack for infiltration and gathering information, he made a great candidate to start getting intel on local crime syndicates. So he carefully misleads or subverts their goals, while working for the good guys.

I'm not sure how well that works with the Shadowbane group though. Since he might have to make use of bluffing. I'm not sure how hardline they would be, and I don't want to be spending the majority of my treasure on atonements...

So I'm still working out some kinks, but thank you for the help, and any more advice is certainly appreciated.

So sometimes I should just keep my mouth shut...hehehe.

I asked my DM about rolling for age, height, weight, and he liked the idea. We will have to roll for abilities as well, so that will likely add something else to my role-playing options.

Ebberon is fun and intrigue characters work very well. Consider looking at sharn inquisitive if you don't feel your current direction still works.

Once you've got things a bit better settled we can help a little more with BG but here's a little something to start.

Dad was a cop. Grandpa was a cop. Great grand-dad was with the soldiers who cleared this land for civilization and proud member of local militia. This is my town. I've lived here all my life.

Great grand-dad died fighting an ogre invasion. Granmps is still working a desk job after losing a leg to a goblin thief. Dad has been promoted to the big city. That me to keep the scum of the world from getting out of control in my town. And don't think I don't know who they are. I've put my fair share away and I can spot a law-breaker at 20 paces... 50 when I'm actually out looking for them.

I've always loved the cop legacy.

that's "master inquisitive", right? ECS 82... however, that would remove the cleric part. shadowbane stalker is much better for that (obviously). I'm a fan of rogue/clerics my self (who says you can't be divine AND sneaky?) so I can dig it.
