A Charisma that low can indicate several things:

a) Ugliness compounded by shyness. You're very unattractive and aware of it. You withdraw into yourself a lot and you tend to mumble. Make it hard for other players to hear you when you speak.

b) Lack of social graces and hygeine. In descriptions, indicate the general lack of good appearances of your character. It may help if you narrate the description of a louse crawling along your character's jacket. Noticing the louse, your character plucks it and pops it in his mouth, chewing noisily.

I'd play it as a severe social disorder...maybe something like an inability displaying emotion properly. In addition, horrible self-image is warranted. You probably should have trouble relating to others and often act or react inappropriately.

To tell you the truth, a 4 in any ability is right on the edge of a non-playable character, if you roleplay properly. They're sereverly handicapped in that ability and it takes a patient group for you to make it very far with them. Hopefully you can play your character in a thoughtful and interesting way, while the group understands and likes your character enough to put up with the hassale having a character like that can mean. Best of luck.

Low charisma can also manifest itself as unprovoked agression or derision, that makes the character extremely unpleasant, and instantly "hatable".

Think 'uncommunitative'...............low charisma is not about being ugly but is about how convincing a communicator you are. I tend to work on:-

4: Uncommunicative

8: Unconvincing communicator

12: Convincing and authoritative communicator

16: Aura of power / command (think strict but respected teacher)

Looking at my PHB, I see that witha Charisma of four you will have the ability to make friends and influence people of ..... the average Dire Rat, Donkey, or Chuul. That is to say, not too much.

How you play it depends on your other ability scores and your race/class.

If your wisdom is good/average, you know that people don't like you, and you will probably be reclusive, evasive in conversation and probably quite sociophobic.

If not, I would imagine that your character is quite likely to put his foot in it very severely every single time he speaks. Every time. Really badly. If his intelligence is high too, he is probably going to insult everyone in the most condescending way possible. If it's bad, then he's just saying the wrong thing all the time.

think 'Daria'. add malice, personality flaws, inattentiveness and lack of appearance. And depending on ur character, more or less wise and intelligent.

Simple. Play it however you want to. Just be a total jerk about it. :smirk:

I'm not saying that's the only way to approach the situation, but that's the way I'd probably play it off.

Unless you plan on having a good alignment. Then you should probably go the socially inept route. Not that you can't be a jerk and be good, but it sure takes a lot of the fun out of being a total jackass. :D

Everyone is describing me IRL. Im very hurt now and will withdraw to my room... Im obviously not even good anuff fer you geeky computer types. :..^(

JK

Low chrisma can also be the opposite of the shy mumbler that is common to think about.

The obnoxious know it all for example. They guy who thinks he knows how to sing.. or is way to loud and aggressive.

'Yaaah Yaah! I know how to do that. Give that here... ill show you how its done. Woops! Bah.. was a piece of trash anyways, it broke to easy! Now MY <thingamabob>.. its much better.'

hell.. I feel like smackin myself just fer typing the above quote.

the loud obnoxious SOB sounds like a good candidate. You could also make him a character who's a wannabe hitler. eventually, his self-centeredness, his napolean complex, his egomania, his condescension toward the world because of their 'inferior minds' (typically more intelligent, less wise) and his anger against all the people who don't pay him the recognition he 'deserves'. For the time being, he's probably 'good' or 'neutral', but those wise enough can sense the corruption and malice within him.

The last character I played with a Charisma that low (a 5), I played as being completely tactless and honest. He said what was on his mind when it was on his mind and didn't care what you thought about it. He was the guy who would answer the question, "Does this dress make me look fat." by saying "No ... your butt makes you look fat, but not the dress." That sort of thing. His most noteworthy line was delivered at a royal banquet, and consisted of:
"Wow, your majesty, you're really a (jerk)." Censored for our younger posters. He was, but that's not usually something you TELL a king. :)

Dig out your 2nd edition PHB and look at Dwarves: Lower charisma because they are dour and taciturn. That is, they are uncommunicative and are unconvincing when they do try to communicate; as a rule.

Think of people who do not "join in" society, who sit on the sidelines and watch but don't participate......or if they do no one takes seriously unless they resort to violence (then, only the violence is taken seriously, not the person, generally). Think of people who have difficulty following humor or conversations, who are just very difficult to 'connect' with.

Alot of these suggestions are valid but not many of them allow for something I demand in my characters: dignity.

With a 4 Charisma you could simply be gruff and seem disdainful of everyone and everything. You are somewhat socially detached, but not to the extreme of being autistic. You know very well how to function with civility and grace but you can't be bothered.
Perhaps you feel you deserve recognition for just being yourself, without any need or desire to win people over with words. You say what you mean and you mean what you feel. This could come across are extremely haughty, but not in a flaunting manner.
You could be extremely critical of things without the need to elaborate those feelings with more than a 'hmph' or a sigh of disgust.
You could be the most attractive person on the planet but without saying a word your body language and the look in your eyes utterly uncompelling.

Sometimes your stats can reflect not just what you are, but who you are. What you are is better than they are. You don't need to prove it and wouldn't want to.

You think that a 4 cha is not extreme?!! Actually it is probably VERY close to asbergers (which is what I guess you mean by autistic – autism is a whole load of illnesses, of which asbergers is the classic one most think of as “autistic”).

But it is simpler than that; people with a 4 charisma are just socially unconnective (it is the social equivalent of impotence/frigidity); it beings with it a certain degree of indignity.

It doesn't even have to be a great personality disorder to have charisma 4. It's just that whenever someone sees you they will have an instant instinctive dislike of you, distrust you and generally want to get away from you. This can be because you have an aura of creepiness or you're disgusting or something similar.

In my campaign, there will be no players with a charisma of four, because it will be near impossible to interact with others.

(I strictly enforce a minimum of 6)

I tend to set a minimum of 8 in all stats (2d6+6, rolled 7 times, drop teh lowest) unless the player has a damn good idea that is both good roleplaying and not going to get in the way of the story / adventuring.

I believe an autist should have a low charisma, but an even lowerer wisdom. To play the typical autist (Dustin Hofman in Rain Man), add an intelligence of 20, but restrict the skills.

Hmmm...get into character with a 4 charisma...having a stat that low can be as much fun as rolling 3 18s... :)

If you're a believer in method acting, stop shaving--whether you're male or female...if your female, hairy legs and short skirts get attention...do not bathe for at least four(4) days prior to each game session...Insult the GM personally and then excuse yourself in the middle of sessions at a random point so you can go out and jog around the house (really gets that effluent BO going)...pace around the table (stopping behind the GM and players when they're passing information quietly and looking at their notes)...call other players in your group at odd hours and talk about things that don't interest them for hours on end...never arrive for the game on time...always be sop early you inonvenience the GM or so late it screws everybody up...Don't wear pants...Practice odd tics & jerks...leer at all members of the opposite sex within group (while not wearing pants)...practice insulting people casually (it eventually becomes instinctive)...mumble, shout, or speak in a monotone at all times, all three at once if you somehow can accomplish the act...scratch when it itches...eat lots of beans & polish sausage...and of course, hit people frequently...always be the one who suggests ordering pizza but never keep money in your wallet for when the pizza guy arrrives...

You'll find everyone BELIEVING your character's 4 charisma with no problem...they will also likely tie you to a steak, pour lighter fluid all over you, set you on fire, and dance around the pyre singing, "Ding, dong, the witch is dead! Which old witch? This old which?" Or they must just send you to therapy. If you live, a good GM will recognize your extreme dedication to realism and award you massive bonus XP each session, with a strong hint at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, etc that you PUT YOUR BONUS POINT INTO CHARISMA!

You will be suprise how quickly how level up in relation to other characters. Think of this as a just reward for your Xtreme Realism method role-playing style...

Do not start behaving completely civilly until you get up to 10 charisma (you can start wearing pants again at 6 and shave/bathe at 8). At this point you will be well into epic levels while the rest of the party struggles with tough bugbear cheiftans...at this point, hire a wizard to write you a Tome of Leadership and Influence +5 (titled: "How to win friends and influence people"), become an inspirational speaker in the fantasy world charging 10,000 gp for each neurotic, socially inept--but extremely wealthy--noble to listen to your speach about how you mastered your lecherous, autist, foul-smelling charmless personality to become not only the highest level bad-a$$ in the land, but a suave and charming one as well! You will be rich. You will be higher level than Elminster, Yoda, or God. You will get girls. You will get boys. You won't even have to try...

basically he would be in his own world. a typical response to a show of emotion around him. might get him to turn away to ignore the event or if forced to reply he might say : "I have no response."

he is someone with little personality. with little to add to social situations. and with even less interest in them.

mr invisible so to speak

or

he is so hideous or inappropriate with his responses everyone else wishes he would disappear.

I'd suggest playing this off in charisma's respect to self-confidence and "personal power."

Your character is weak-souled, spongy, and has poor self-worth resulting in him/her being clingy and dependent. Fawn on the other party members, desperate for their attention, their approval, their recognition.

However, the idea of keeping your dignity and simply playing cha 4 off as total lack of regard for others is the one which appeals most to me . . .

4 Charisma, you cant have dignity. Dignity is likeable. 4 Charisma is more hated then hittler. (yes, hittler had high charisma, but thats not the point)

This thread makes me think of a recurring character on a skit comedy show here in Japan. The character is called "Lord Ondeen" and dresses like an 18th century French noble (powdered wig, military uniform with lots of tassels, rapier) and struts around acting arrogant and rude (since he's a "noble" and they're just regular Japanese folks eating lunch or playing soccer or whatever) until someone stands up to him, then he falls to the floor, crying like a child for the people he just insulted to be his friends.

Definitely a low Cha character, and one that could be fun to play. :)

I didn't say anything about the character having dignity per se. I meant I cannot play a character who is not taken seriously, is a joke or a buffoon (unless that's the whole point of the character).

The concept of dignity in the case of my example would be from the point of view of the character themself. To that character wasting time by talking at length to others is undignified. They would not lower themselves to that level. Others would view this as undignified or abrasive, hence the low charisma: no force of personality.

The point is a character can have a low charisma and still carry themselves with dignity, even if it is not perceived as such by others.
Think outside the box.
