| Werrwaaa12-27-06, 06:09 PM | New Year's day will be the first session of a new game a friend of my is running. It is going to be set in Eberron at the dawn of the Last War. I am playing a half-elf from House Lyrandar. I'm going to be taking levels of Rogue, Half-elf Paragon, Dragonmarked Heir and Storm Sentinel. The idea is to really play up the Lyrandar "ideal". As a kind of pirate-esque, roguish fellow, I will likely do a fair bit of the party's face-work. What kind of character traits would epitomize this kind of adventurer? I see Jack Sparrow in my head, even though I really don't want to. Maybe a little more good hearted version of him? CN or CG? |

There's no reason to stick with "just one;" I'd go with a blend of your favorites, and what makes sense of the character. A little research can go a long ways. :) |

Ash from the Evil Dead series, he might be a badass but simply try looking at his witty personality. Spike Spegal would be a great example of a CG swashbuckler [except in fighting style], see Cowboy Bebop. You don't need to take anything from any one of these people though, just make a person who is absolutely confidant in his abilities. Once his weapon is in hand the world simply falls before him in well sliced pieces. His sardonic smile, quick wit, and even faster blade lead him though his madcap adventures. To put it simply, you need to figure more as to his personality, race and class should always come after this. |
| Devlonir12-28-06, 11:40 AM | how about Captain Reynolds from Firefly? quick wit, mean in a fight.. but good at heart. He loves his ship and his crew and distrust nearly anyone else. He is also a great tactician and has a knack to survive everything, though not often unscathed. |

| imworlds12-29-06, 12:12 PM | We have analogues to pirates and rogues in our world. I would start there. Rogues and pirates tend to be people that resent authority or thrive on freedom outside the established system. As much as I despise the attitude of gang-members, they are representative of pirate-like personalities. You could start there. I would also look at biker gangs of the fifties and sixties, and how they lived on the road and continually fought with each other over territory rights. These could be good stock characters for NPCs. I know of a few biographies by ex-biker gang members, but I can't remember these titles offhand. If you are looking for charisma in your rogue, I would read up on early film stars. They apparently had a very care-free and partying lifestyle. And the women were wild, and the men tended to be dashing. The early film era stars would give you ideas for more romanticized versions of the rogue. Try Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn. Try to get some movies about early film stars as well. They often were witty, sometimes petulant, and always charming. A third option might be to read up on modern day hackers. Hackers are cyber-era rogues and thieves, and they often have personalities that go along with their "profession": arrogance, charm and pride. Hope this helps... |
