| lamrar02-05-08, 03:33 AM | This is not a rules question :P Here is the situation: our last session ended with my character, a lvl 11 necropolitian wizard being turned. Then we ran out of time, and have to pick it up from there next session. My first question is: How do you think turning work on the mind of an intelligent undead? From the srd: Effect and Duration of Turning Turned undead flee from you by the best and fastest means available to them. They flee for 10 rounds (1 minute). If they cannot flee, they cower (giving any attack rolls against them a +2 bonus). Since the undead flee, my initial thought was that turning caused some sort of panic, but their imunity to fear seems to speak against this. Also, the rules say "flee from you by the best and fastest means available to them." Does this mean teleport for a wizard? Or is running sufficient? Phantom steed? My second question is: How would you roleplay an intelligent undead being turned? Scream in fear and disgust? Being "pushed" away? Any advice or opinions will be much appreciated :) |
| Mysteria02-05-08, 03:38 AM | I would say teleport is definitely an option for a wizard. Maybe he suddenly remember something very important to do at place X that can't wait at all ... So he runs off to there right now then, once the turning wears of goes something "What the heck am I doing here? I should be at Y!" |
| lamrar02-05-08, 03:54 AM | Thanks for your reply :) If we assume that teleport is possible while turned, is it mandatory? Turned undead flee from you by the best and fastest means available to them. Teleport is without a doubt the best and fastest mean of escape available to my wizard. Am I breaking the rules if I don't use it? |

| lamrar02-05-08, 07:16 AM | I think you should: Ask your DM. I see someone put their 18 in wisdom :P I'll do that! :) Any other ideas for RPing being turned? |
| Mysteria02-05-08, 11:57 AM | I don't know ... Maybe you suddenly feel like you're five years old again and you've done something 'bad', so your 'father' (or another appropriate adult person) is angry at you so you want to hide from him because you don't want to admit that you goofed up ... (The adult person being the one who just turned you.) |
| Sakaki2202-08-08, 09:24 AM | You open your eyes, looking at the Cleric raise his holy symbol proudly into the air. With wide eyes and a furious grin, he begins to pray. A burning warmth courses through your un-beating veins, tasting the hot pains of life for just a second. You try to avert your eyes, his simple amulet looks like an inferno scorching the skies, burning with the unending rage of his Gods very will! You panic, you jerk away, and you run! You pray you can escape his wrath, pray you can will the warmth of holiness and life out of your body before it incinerates you! Frantic, you scour your mind for the arcane pronunciations that will aid your escape. Calling forth from your Art, you scream out the last syllables of your Teleportation spell and flee far, far away. As you close your eyes, collapsing to one knee in safely, you hear the Cleric's prayers ring in your ears, subsiding to nothingness. You slowly find focus and calm as your body returns to it's normal unlife. Yet you feel as if the embers of a fire rest in your veins, slowly burning out. The pain physically subsides, but you still feel them burn deep in your mind. ===== Sound good? |
| Mysteria02-08-08, 10:57 AM | Sonds good, but he's immune to fear. ;) |
| Sakaki2202-08-08, 11:34 AM | So are Kender. Didn't stop Tasslehoff from trembling and "feeling wrong" while dragons bore down on him. I'd call it the difference between the mind affecting powers of fear magic and the realization that somebody and their God hates you. :P |
| CrimsonDeath02-08-08, 12:53 PM | You could be fleeing in disgust instead. Or you could simply be fleeing and not know (or be able to explain) why; nobody said undead psychology has to make sense to the living. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose02-09-08, 01:09 AM | I tend to think of this as an antipathy type effect. You do not fear the thing you simply and uncontrollably want to be away from it. It's just as irrational as fear but untinged by emotion. |
| Heliomance02-10-08, 09:33 AM | I think actually fear might be the best way to play it. Yes, you're immune to magical mind-affecing fear effects, but you're not immune to mundane fear. And frankly, I think that seeing a taste of a god's power and knowing that he hates the very fact that you exist would be pretty terrifying. |
| Mad_Jack02-10-08, 02:54 PM | See, that right there is the key - you can't be *made* to feel fear, but that doesn't stop you from being afraid of things all on your own. Words like "panicked" and "shaken" are just game mechanics. The holy symbol of the cleric turning you has just become psychological kryptonite, the entire sum of everything that is your antithesis. This is what the holy symbol represents - It shows you the true horror of your unatural existence, the absolute *wrongness* of everything you are, and you're fleeing in disgust and loathing, not from the holy symbol, but from yourself. :weep: And thus you run off as fast as possible to start a blog and become Emo, lol. |
