I am trying to put together a submission for the newsletter and I have a very simple question I would love for everyone to answer.

How has the Charactrer Development board enchanced your RPG experiance?

For a start it adds to the role-playing experience because, through the help of all our friends here, we are able to create a more detailed, interesting character background and personality that makes the game so much more fun to play!
For example....playing a troll is one thing...but playing a troll who was captured by a wizard and forced to do manual labour, who then escapes and is now on a mission to track down his clan and gain leadership, bearing a great resentment to magic and hatred against those who would treat him as a lesser being.
Which troll would you play? *pauses for answer*
Exactly.

It helps me, not through asking questions, but through answering them. I get experience putting myself into other character's shoes and deciding what good roleplay moves should be made.

This board is more of a nice pasttime than an actual learning experience. Sure, I'll see a nice idea every now and then, but not really anything that will change the way I play the game.
I have always been into indepth roleplaying. That is not enhanced by my experiences here.

I frequent these boards mainly because I just enjoy swapping experiences with like-minded people.

To me, this board helps just like the other boards. Between all the posts, it puts out ideas that my mind may not have come up with. Now, usually I don't take an idea full on, but a certain something, a twist here, an concept there, is like fuel for the imagination. And on the few times I have posed a question, the feedback helps me solidify the original idea.

For me, it's more like a game. I like thinking about character concepts, but I am not really fond of stats, and helping others making up a background for their characters is quite refreshing indeed.

And since it is my favorite board, it is there I most often practice my second-language skills.

I'd say it hasn't really. At least not very much.

I mean, I like the board and visit it all the time, but overall it hasn't helped that much.

I used to be a more in depth role player, but our current group is cares less about that than they do about just having some fun. Our games run about 5 hours, and if we get 3 1/2 hours of gaming in I'd say that's pretty optimistic. The conversation goes off on tangents quite requently; about movies, books, music, daily life, etc.

I know that if necessary, I can come up with a great character with varied personality traits, quirks, fears, hopes, etc. That means that the stuff found on this board are less useful than they might be to newer players.

Really, the best thing this forum provides for me is some easy reading material. Once in a very great while, I'll come across a personality profile for a character that I'll want to implement on the week that I DM, but for the most part I just take care of that stuff myself.

It also gives me a good place to have a good, mature discussion (not arguement) about the merits of "Character Optimisation" (min/max) and how character development and min/max should not be considerd exclusive out of hand. I don't want to derail this thread, so any discussion anyone wants to have about that will be ignored by myself. Unless you want to take it to another thread, then I'll be happy to join in.

Cheers
