For instance, should a cleric of Moradin heal a 1/2 Orc? Or an Elf?

How does one work out the reasoning behind this?

C'mon, I need a reason for a Correlon Larethian Cleric to heal a Dwarven Berzeker...

It depends on the cleric, the god, and the race in question.

For example, a cleric of moradin might heal dwarves, halflings, gnomes, and humans (maybe), but not elves, half elves, or half orcs. A cleric of yondalla, though (a generous godess) would probably heal just about anyone. Also, you might make it dependant on alignment: maybe a cleric only heals/ helps out people within one or two "steps". Ie., a chaotic good cleric might help a neutral or even LG person, or a CN person, but not a LN one. In fact, you might make it so that clerics aren't even capable of healing people of radically different alignments in your world.

I don't see a problem if the 1/2 orc or elf is your friend. while elves and dwarves don't get along that much they are still two good races and their might be differences, but not to the fact that the dwarven god won't grant spells to heal an elf.
a half orc might be different, but is is all up to the DM.

I don't think that Gods take so active an interest in what their clerics do that they make a cure spell fizzle if it's cast on a race that is not normally friendly to the cleric's. I think they trust their clerics to have the wisdom and the good judgement to do what's right with their divine gifts, and if that involves curing a friendly and helpful member of an otherwise "hostile" race, then so be it.

Deities trust the judgement of their clerics (otherwise they couldn't become clerics). It's not a matter of who the deity would heal, it's a matter of who the cleric would heal.

A cleric of Corellon doesn't need to justify healing a dwarf, nor does a cleric of Moradin need to justify healing an elf. The two races may have had their differences, but they aren't mortal enemies.

A cleric of Corellon would be able to heal even an orc or drow or demon, if he had a good reason (probably to interrogate it). If there's a good reason, Corellon wouldn't deny the spell. If there isn't a good reason, the cleric wouldn't try the spell in the first place.

The only time a cleric is denied his spells is when he's stripped of all his powers due to gross lapses in devotion. The only exception may be the Miracle spell whose description explicitly states that the the deity must directly approve it.

Well in an old 2E campaign I once had a dwarven fighter in a party with elvin clerics. Several deaths later and after an encounter where a solar of Corellon raised him, my dwarf became a faithful follower, even though he was a dwarf. The DM even sent me to the elvin upper planed when I died once. (Hey it's an advantage to being the only one with a beard in the elvin paradise!)

So it can happen. I guess.

But in the general case, it is highly doubtful you will find a non racial person converting to your racial faith. But conversion aside, any good cleric should do good to all, not just to their own race. Anyone who helps the race should be in turn helped, because it is in the best interest for the race in general, and it's just downright good.

So non racial party members who help racial party members and the race in general certanly deserve the healing powers of the racial deity, assuming of course that we are talking about good aligned creatures.

Thus it is good and proper for a cleric of Moradin to heal any good character who is a friend of dwarves. or a cleric of Corellon to heal any good character who is a friend of elves.
