| Sisyfos04-14-04, 02:52 PM | :) Also, what is that god of yours. I am not familiar with it (is it from Forgotten Realms?). Explain a bit about that god and give us more info about the character. What level are you, what background the character has, what goals do you want him to have, etc. etc. |
| Trydan04-15-04, 03:24 AM | Hmm... I agree with Sisyfos: we need just a little bit more information, to start giving concrete suggestions. However, let's just for the moment try this as a thought experiment... (Disclaimer: I know absolutely nothing about Solonor Thelandira, so this could be completely out of character -- see my first comment). Imagine that this elf is a member of a extremist cult. According to their holy text, it is there chosen duty to fill the hearts of the world with the words of the sacred text. To this end, the clerics of this cult engrave passages from the sacred text onto arrow heads and, should they feel the need to dispatch something, then the word of the sacred text (namely, filling the hearts of the world with the sacred text) is fullfilled, and these clerics receive eternal salvation (or whatever). Hmm... I realise that this is probably not in the style of an elf god/cult, but someone could possibly modify it? Are there any other ideas? |
| LiXinjian04-15-04, 09:00 AM | A cleric of a god who's favoured weapon is a bow might be trying to emulate his god, plain and simple. Or another might find that the focus required to properly use the bow is the perfect way to sharpen his mind and spirits so that the teachings of his god are not wasted on him. Only through diligence and harmony can one hope to understand his god's teachings... it's like a breathing exercise, but (sometimes) lethal. Or, using part of Trydan's suggestion, your cleric could engrave the shafts of his arrows with religious texts and whisper them as he lets his arrow loose. It could be some kind of ritual, or a way for an absent-minded clergyman to learn the holy texts by heart. "Where's that "Thou Shall not Harm Trees..." arrow? I really need to learn this passage before my sermon tomorrow..." That cleric could keep specific excerpts for specific situations/enemies, making sure the excerpts fits the target somehow. Like firing at a tree-cutting orc with an arrow engraved with the aforementioned "Thou Shall not Harm Trees" text. Oh, and Solonor is a hunter, a foe of drows but a keeper of balance first. He seeks to keep the species equally proportioned, or something. In that case, your cleric probably wishes to walk in his god's footsteps in that matter, and a bow is essential for hunting. Hunting itself becomes some kind of prayer for your cleric. Or perhaps he simply disdains melee combat, disturbed by all the gore and blood. With his bow, he can kill without the fuss of soiling his clothes with his enemies's bloody entrails. |
| Henry Hankovich04-17-04, 04:50 AM | Not to make things unnecessarily Nipponophiliac, but adopting the Kyudo ("Zen archery") philosophy could make for a decent base to build from. http://www.kyudo.com/kyudo-k.html So you'd have a religious philosophy which values self-control and mental harmony at all times, and reflects/exercises this discipline in the practice of archery. The actual flight of the arrow is less important than having the proper, pure heart and and mind when in the act of drawing and loosing... |
