I'm going to be playing an elf finesse fighter/duelist. I'm thinking about chaotic-neutral alignment.

How might I go about roleplaying this character? I'm thinking maybe just an elf out to adventure, show off his skills with the rapier, and experience the world? Any other ideas?

What about backstory? I'll be partying with quite a strange group. A lawful-evil human fighter/dragon rider and a lawful-good human paladin. The DM says we will join under a quest from the king...but how could we justify having characters of such varying alignments together? Maybe I come to the human city for a fencing tournement or something? I win the tournement and recieve praise from the king and maybe he offers me a job?

Also later on I'm going to go shadowdancer(Fighter6-Duelist1-Shadowdancer2-Duelist5-Shadowdancer6)...how might I roleplay this change? How could I go from being a fencer to a class with such obscure abilities?

I made this combo for powergaming purposed but I'd also really like to have a good story to my character.

I don't know what kind of mission the king has in mind, but I can give you a few ideas.

Your group exists out of characters with very different alignments. So it might be the task of the paladin to keep the other two on to the mission.

Your character might be a famous fencer (or an upcoming fencer with good potential). You've challenged almost everyone in your Elven Homelands so you left your country.
You went to lands of humans to find new opponents to challenge.

One day when you're sitting in a local inn drinking good elven wine (maybe in company of some female admirers), a young man enters. He asks if you're ........ (insert your name). You tell him that you are indeed the famous, beloved mister ..... (insert your name). The man draws his rapier and shouts: "You murderer, you killed my father". The two of you duel in the inn. Just when you deliver the fatal thrust/blow/attack the city guard enters the room. You're arrested and put into prison.

After many years of imprisonment you're given an offer you can't refuse. In exchange for your freedom you must perform a major quest for the king. It is probably a dirty job otherwise he would have asked a few of his knights. You agree and a few moments later you're brought to the king (you're still in manacles).

A priest of Heironius walks towards you and casts a few spells on you (Gease/Quest , Mark of Justice , or something like that). On your mission you're accompanied by a paladin of the order. He is aware you're a criminal and he is there to watch you. There will be one other person that is going to join for the quest.

You are now free again, the joys of life are waiting for you. You can't wait to tast some good elven wine and to have proper meal. If you befriend the paladin he might not feel so duty bound to watch your every move and you can try to get rid of those nasty spells casted on you.

The only problem I can see is that a paladin won't voluntarily travel with an evil character. So the way I can see him traveling with an evil character is to do like Twilly said and have the king priests cast geas/quests and the like.

However I would suggest to the lawful evil player to be good, having an evil dragon would be bad with mr. straight as an arrow paladin in the party. Too many party conflicts.

Twilly: I really like the duel idea :)

Still need something to tie in the levels of shadowdancer.

Perhaps the character just doesn't want to be seen sometimes. To keep from being arrested again, to leave the paladin's sight once in a while. Hide in plain sight would be convenient for such purposes.
