Okay I could use some help with a character of mine. I have a background and everything like that, I just can't seem to get a good feel for who he is.

So here's the Background:

The burning wasteland of the desert holds an omen to all. This barren land show the future of the world within it’s charred sands. But even in savage environments such as that life strives to continue.

Argen Selgot holds a large portion of respect from his small nomadic tribe. Respect his only son would easily inherit. The desert holds its sway over things and in the case of this tribe a small clutch of devils follows them wherever they go. Aratons as they are known by the desert folk were able to convince the son of Argen to destroy the tribe in return for vast nigh unimaginable power.

Before the sun rose above the horizon everyone in the tribe, save his family, was dead laid out for the vultures. “See what real power is? Father.” The boy gloated his voice held an unnatural edge. He held out his hands dried blood crusted for the evening of blood.

“You are my son no longer. May your name be forgotten in barren wastes you so eagerly wish to join.” His son laughed at the feeble attempt to stem the slaughter.

He struck his father down with a mighty blow that would make mountains tremble. After removing his father’s eyelids the depraved youth made his father watch as he skinned his mother alive. He tortured his father with dull implements and salts from the desert and through the tortured screams he recommitted his curse upon the retched thing that was once his son.

His bloodlust finally sated he returned to the devil’s enclave and they completed the dark ritual locking their profane power within his flesh. The deserts fury raged within him and with his newfound power the youth sought out slaves and attempted to carve his own empire from the deserts of Calimshan. Oddly a small incursion of drow stopped his pursuit of this goal. He tried to claim a weapon that he would use to forge his legacy in the dunes and have his name remembered forever to spite his father’s spirit.

“Father, you old bastard, my name shall be remembered forever more. Through the sands of time when my name is spoken all who hear it shall tremble.” He cried into the desert. “The name of… Of…” His name had been lost within the desert of his soul.

Rain fell from the sky and the blood from slaughtering his tribe formed on his hands. Deep regret overcame him and sorrow filled his soul. The blackness in his soul melted away as the rain fell, all the atrocities the young man had committed revisited him in that instant.

Now he had a new goal: Redemption.

[this is far from my best work but this is what I came up with. I want him to be a Monk possibly with Warlock levels, but that's not the problem.

i think he should have a really high pitched voice, but that's just me, because i think it'd be hilarious :)

I feel that his up bringing will have made him hard, in the way that desert is hard. He would have no tolerance for fools and any one he sees as frivilous and wasteful.
He would be respectful of power but forever cautious fearing it's corruption.
Another important aspect of his personality would be a great respect for names having lost his own. Perhaps it would be that he would always refere to people by their full name and rile against any abreviation of his own name.

Thats a brief view on how I would play a character with that sort background

This background sounds like it's meant for a higher level character. That's quite the resume for a character starting out...

For the most part that's how I played him. I really like the name thing though, I'm gonna try and fit that in.

@Quatermain, Nah, association with devils tends to be a low level thing, that's when some people are the most succeptible to persuasion. His tribe was mainly Warriors and Experts anyway that focused on unarmed combat due to the terrain. The devils basically granted him some extra power that was stripped from him when he turned away from them.

the way it looked to me during the consorting with the devil, it seemed he might be performing the ritual of bonding to become an Acolyte of the Skin, or some variant thereof.

aside from that, It would take more time for me to decide definitively how to play him.

In my original plan he acquired Warlock levels this way but after awhile it was just something I didn't want to do. In reality it turned into a plot device that couldn't be mimiced with WotC products but as they say throw in enough splatt books and you can do anything.
