The campaign I'm playing in is extremely dangerous, with death around every corner. As such, the DM has asked all of the players to have a back-up character ready, so if our primary dies we can hop right in with the new one and hit the ground running. Currently I'm playing Wizard, and I want to keep up the spell casting aspect, but the variety of a druid seems very exciting to me. Additionally, I have a tendancy to take a leadership role, and I want to play a character that is more likely to just go with the flow than be a follower.

The concept I have is very deeply rooted in the campaign setting. There is an aztec inspired people living on this barely-explored island. My character would be a druid of this particular people, following around a group of foreign adventurers from distant lands. As far as her interaction with the party is concerned, she would generally stay out of sight and out of mind. However, she would always be at hand, if they need her help. For example, she might take the form of a bird, and perch herself on the window of the house where the party is staying, and only make herself known when needed. At the end of the day, she considers herself an observer of the party, and not an active element. Still, she would help them along the way as she saw fit.

Additionally, she would remain all but unknown to everyone except the party. To whom she would reveal herself to give information they may need, or fight on their behalf. A good analogy may be that she is like a guardian spirit, whose presence can be felt, but proof of existence is rare.

Her motives would be an curiosity about the strangers, and a hope that they could do some good for a fallen nature of the island. The island is not only full of nasty beast, but there are many unnatural extraplanar creatures lurking about. I think to a druid, this perversion of nature would be very upsetting.

Can anyone that has played a character like this give me some tips? I know I'd be riding a fine line. Too involved with the party and I lose the flavor, but too aloof and it will be like I wasn't there at all.
