I am planning a character that will be a human effigy (Complete Arcane effigy, not the MM2 variant). However, I'm not sure how to read the 'creating an effigy' rules. It says:

'Recalculate BAB, saving throws, feats and skills according to described below'.

'Drop any HD gained from class levels (to a minimum of 1) and change to d10'

Does this mean the characters overall HP will change, or will it lose class levels?

Subsequently it talks a lot of losing all special abilities. Does this include class abilities?

Thanks in advance

After reading this bit, I don't believe you can take it as a human.

It says drop all class HD, that would mean only Racial HD would remain. You'd need to be like an Orc or a Gnoll to gain this template.
Notice under LA it says - , and not +0. That means you need special permission to take it, and it is not for base races.

If a template says to drop all class HD, there always has to be at least 1 HD left, even if the race is not stated with any racial HD. This is the case for all templates, especially the Skeleton and Zombie templates, which also drop class HD

There's also the fact that any creature with the template applied has a Wis 10, Cha 1, Con - and Int -, so any creature that takes it should invest in melee classes, and should get an Awaken Construct spell somewhere in its background if it's going to be a player character.

On another note, I'm quite favourable of using Effigy Creature and Awaken Construct for creating unique NPCs. It's the best way to achieve android life in D&D :D
