In my new campaign, I've decided to be a Diviner. The thing is I have no idea how to play such a character. I have a certain idea, but there are no real archetypes for this (most literary wizards tend to hurl fireballs instead of have a consistency of foresight). Any advice would be helpful. What are some ideas to help play a diviner?

Think of Bard from laketown (you know, the guy who slew Smaug with the black arrow?). Always seeing portents and omens in mundane circumstances. Probably at least one obscure, irrational phobia. Just remember: you don't need to cast a spell to claim to be telling the future. Alternatively, think of Atticus Finch: thoughtful, insightful, almost never wrong when it comes down to an important decision, and a killer shot when it comes down to it (True Strike is a great spell in either case; just remember, it applies to ONLY ONE attack roll).

here are some personalitie types you may be able to consider for this guy.

Smug: You know everything thats about to happen, before it happens. as such, you tend to feel superior to other people, say things like "I told you so" and carry around an umbrella on days you know its gonna rain.

Paranoid: you have the ability to watch people all the time, as such, you know how mean, petty and spiteful folks can be in private, this has made you terribly distrustful of everyone around you. always use your magic to spy on your comrades, you never know if there plotting against you.

Blackmailer: everyone has a secret, and odds are you know it, you can use your magic to find out embarrasing secrets about nobles and rivals, and use that information to get whatever you want.

Fatalist: Youve seen the future, as such, youve seen you and your loved ones inevitable deaths, plus the deaths of others. as such, you tend to be a bit nihilistic, you realize that youll eventually die, so you want to make as big an impression on the world as possible.

Just for future refrence, what schools have you taken as your barred schools?

as for your function in the group, your the teams long term informant. use your divining powers to spy on NPC's you meet long distance and to check magic items for curses, you can also see through illusions and locate individuals near you that are disguised.

you also serve as the team translator, since youll have access to the tounges and comprehend languages spell.

hope this helps.

If your in a low-int party you could simply fake it, keep your nose in the air and when you smell the undead coming you could stop and shudder and proclaim "Friends; zombies and the unlife horrors will be upon us on this road..."

If the DM himself is known for random encounters and fights at every corridor, simply state every few minutes... "I have forseen trouble..."

Or when your party takes a fireball and your character makes the only successful save, state "[whew], I saw that coming"

Nothing more fun than a charlatan diviner ;)
