i'm a tad confused [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-05-05, 02:35 PM okay i'll admit it, i'm more than a tad confused. the monks flurry of blows is confusing the hell out of me.

i've got a 7th level monk. he has the two weapon fighting feat. his strength is 20. how many attacks does he get at what bonuses??? doing the math a few different ways i was told by my other players and gm, i've gotten very mixed results. if memory serves, the phb says at 7th level i've got +4/+4. if i'm doing my math correctly, with two weapon fighting, this puts me at +2/+2/+2 right? someone said i was supposed to add my BAB to those numbers.

also next game i will be getting a monks belt. where will that put me with flurry of blows?? should i get improved two weapon fighting?

12-05-05, 03:35 PM Wrong forum for this, but I'll answer you anyways. A level 7 monk using an offhand unarmed strike with the two-weapon fighting feat and flurry of blows with 20 strength, not counting any other modifiers, is going to have an attack reutine of +7/+7/+7

You have +5BAB, a +5 strength mod, flurry of blows gives you a -1 penaulty to all attacks and TWF gives you another -2, which means you get 3 attacks at +7 BAB each. In one level, your attack reutine will look like +8/+8/+8/+3, since you'll finnally get another extra attack from your BAB. At level 9, you'll get an attack reutine of +9/+9/+9/+4 since the penaulty for using flurry of blows is removed. At level 11 your attack reutine will look like +11/+11/+11/+11/+6 because you'll get two extra attacks on a flurry instead of just one.

You know, for the longest time the monk's flurry ability confused the hell outta me, too. The guy above me was right, though. You will get +7/+7/+7, but here's another way to figure it out:
The flurry of blows column in the monk table in the PHb has base attack bonus and flurry penalty both taken into account. For your flurry ability, treat the numbers there as your base attack bonus when using a flurry. So, for example, if you wanted to do a flurry without the off-hand attack, you would have +4 from flurry bonus (instead of base-attack bonus) and +5 from strength, for a total of +9/+9. If you use the off-hand attack, you take a minus two penalty to these, so +7/+7, but the off-hand attack isn't part of the flurry, so you use your normal base attack bonus for that attack (with the -2 from two-weapon fighting.)

12-06-05, 02:06 PM in the 3.0 phb i know for a fact it says monks fighting unarmed have no off-hand attacks....basically what i take this to mean is that they use all of their limbs for unarmed strikes so they are already using both arms and legs, and therefore don't get extra attacks from two-weapon fighting...
