I'm writing a biography for a character. I'd like your feedback.

Bart was born in a small village about 150 kilometers west of the capital of the gnome republic. From an early age on he was very interested in nature and how nature works. In fact he felt more at home in the fields and forests around the village then his own home playing with his friends. It was not at all unusual that he went along with the foresters or the sheperds out into the forests and fields respectively rather then to go and play hide & seek with the other children.
When he was ten he was discovered to have the gift by a druid that was passing through who tested him and two years later took him to a circle where he was educated as to be a druid. At the ready age of 16 Bart finally learned the secret language and was initiated as a druid in the circle. He remained there for five years and they where relatively happy years. He enjoyed the natural surroundings and the general simplicity of life. But in the end he grew bored with his existance. So with the permission of his master he took an apprentice a young elven girl named Sondirra. She was bright and gifted so it wasn't that surprising that she was initiated as a druid only two years later. But Bart realized that this place was a dead end for him and he had heard of the many wonders of nature, of diffrent and exotic places. So the night after Sondirra was initiated he decided to leave the circle and explore the world. Taking his time he wandered from place to place practising medicine along the way and studying nature in all its forms. All seemed to be well for a while. At least until that fateful day.
The day before that he had been chasing an injured doe and by sheer bad luck he had sprained his ankle so he went into town and rented a room in one of the inns and the next morning he was awoken by a reveille. There was a draft and thats where the trouble began...
The reveille and the draft where actually the first session of the game. Thats when I met the rest of the party and we went downriver to escape the draft.

His personality:
Bart is practical and doesn't care about all the strange rules soceity has made for itself. These rules include dress codes, not playing fetch with your animal companion within the city walls etc. He knows about general laws and will obey them as long as it isn't too bothersome. Beaurocracy however is something he can't stand.
He is practical and conservative. Nature has done it in her way for thousands of years. Its not up to us to change that. This practical nature includes the motto: The shortest route between two points is a straight line. Walk that line and you'll be less tired in the end.

Chaotic Natural Gnome Druid?

Cool story... Gives a reason for adventure, and a little personality... What do you need?

it's a good starting point/summary, but you should go a little deeper, maybe have something actually happen in his old druid circle that forced him to leave, rather then the typical "he got bored and figured adventuring would be a fun & exciting option". tell us a bit about his parents-were they happy with his choice, or ashamed by it? did he have any noteable experiences while becoming a druid? what about this girl? it sems like she was almost randomly dropped in there. maybe flesh her out a bit more too-did you help train her because she somehow reminded you of yourself, a few years previous, or did your gnome have a thing for her?

in real life, everyone has baggage they carry around. friends and family, or the lack thereof, have a big impact on a person. not many peopl have no real friends, and if they do, there' usually a good reason for it.

now, I'm not saying that D&D= Real Life, but it can often be useful to take a few pointers from real life to help build a compelling character.
[shameless plug] to help get an idea of what I'm talking about, check out my thread here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=601080) [/shameless plug] :D

good luck!

Sorry I forgot to specify his race. He is human. the gnome republic is a very large country.

Thanks for the ideas Dipteran. I'm going to work on it some more.

I've expanded the story a lot. Though unfortunately I did not write it in english but in dutch.

The things I added can be surmised as this:
His parents, especially his father wasn't happy about Bart's fascination with nature. He should have learned his fathers trade so he could inherit the smithy later in life. And as a good father he discouraged his behaviour. And as a bad father he discouraged it with a stick.
The druid that found him saw how he was being mistreated and stole him from his familty and took him to the druidic circle where he was free to pursue his fancies and learn to be a druid.
However all the beatings had left some serious emotional scars and he was reluctant, more then that really, to venture outside the grove and his master realized that eventually he would become a hermit or a madman if it went on like this.
So he gave him an apprentice, Sondirra who was curious, bright could not sit still for a single moment. As he taught her she coached him farther and farther from the grove until she got sick of it. She stole his staff and hit him with it and then ran away to the village.
It took Bart 3 days to build up the nerve to go there and once he was there he couldn't stop he went to his father and beat seven kinds of crap out of him. He would have killed him but Sondirra stopped him. This however destroyed any ties he still had with his family. (now at this point I'm not sure if he should feel glad or sad about this.)
He finished teaching her and she was initiated as a druid as well.
(I'm tempted to add an element of love between Sondirra and Bart but I'm not sure if that would be beneficial to the whole story)

For the people who know dutch or have a online translator I've got the full piece here: The piece written in italics is still under revision.
