Inspired by a recent thread, I agreed that we "anti-stereotypes" should get together. Perhaps share a moment of filling in these blanks:

"My (insert class/race) thinks he/she is a (insert different class or race)!"

I've a paladin/rogue halfling who makes obvious attempts at stealing, but saves her good pick pocket rolls for replacing the "stolen" objects. She likes announcing around NPCs such statements as "Yeah, you know us halflings... sneaky little guys we are!" and, after detecting evil on rich, noble NPCs in a town, "I'd like to steal what's in HIS purse!" (Fellow partymates have been able to translate that last phrase as "Let's smite this guy!")

"I'm just a big plant guy who drinks and says crap like that!" says Shadovar "Plant" Oakenheart, a half orc PC of mine.

He passes himself off as just your typical drunk half orc....well he tries. Really he does. But in all actuality, he is an epic level druid with the Verdant Lord PrC. Thus he is a Plant...a character who has the plant type. And he is called Plant for a reason. He resembles a humanoid shaped plant. He looks like himself but is obviously (wood skin, leafy hair etc..) a plant. In combat, you rarely see him cast. It's all about "fhqwhgads", his Greataxe. A +4 throwing and returning vorpal greataxe. He's a barbarian/ranger/druid/verdant lord so he can use the weapon with no problem. He does follow Mielikki and is a fierce defender of the forest. But he spends a lot of time in the city drinking with dwarven drinking buddies... Typical barbarian...with lots and lots of druidic powers...

I love my Plant.

My bard thinks he's a Sorceror/Wizard/Loremaster/Cleric/Rogue/Duelist (he cheats)/Commoner/Aristocrat/All of the above.

My druid thinks he's a ranger/cleric/All of the above

All cases should be fairly obvious

My bard/rogue desperately wants to be a warrior, but he just can't pull his act together. He has the reflexes but he's not tough or strong enough. He makes do with a rapier, but he's not very good with it yet. He does try though...

My level 3 barbarian/level 2 rogue doesn't function as a very good rogue. Basically, he's just a melee fighter who's lack of two more brawlin' levels is offset by the Evasion and Sneak Attack and a +1 flaming greatsword that does 2d6 of fire damage instead of 1d6 (hooray for noob DM's!).

My rogue really didn't like to be called a thief:

*Shouting*: "I'm not a thief!" *followed by in a matter-of-factly voice*: I'm repossessing stuff"

Cute...reminds me of Locke from FF3... "I am not a thief! I am a treasure hunter!"

I like the idea of a reincarnationist thief. He's not stealing, he's etting back what was taken or borrowed in a previous life. He used to be very rich...

I've had a gnome rogue who wanted everyone to think he was a wizard (he knew he wasn't but liked to pretend...). And I had a halfling cleric who pretended to be a fighter (Xbow specialist). He was epic and he shocked the whole group by casting Miracle at a key moment (I'd already told the DM about his little "quirk").

There can also be more serious versions of these sorts of characters, like in Alias, all the people who thought that they were working for the CIA but were really working for SD-6 (who are terrorists and whatnot). A lot of people do similar things that blur the line between paladins and blackguards, occasionally involving a Fiend of Corruption.

I once had a teifling rogue who introduced himself to the group as a cleric of Pelor. He had a tail, but he hid it by wearing a white robe over that and his armor (and his +3 shortsword). He carried around a book full of Pelor's teachings and used a mundane heavy mace in combat.

There was already a cleric in the group who did all the healing, so when asked why he never cast any spells, my rogue always said "I don't wish to squander the glory of Pelor needlessly" or some such bs.

This unfortunately posed somewhat of a problem when the other (real) cleric announced that the party didnt need two clerics, so he was going to make a fighter... :mymy:

As you can probably guess, they figured it out not too long afterward :tantrum:

But, it was definately fun while it lasted :D

Party approaches the gates of a guarded city...

Guard: Hey! You can't bring that in here!
PC1: What?
Guard: That Troll!
PC2: I'm not a troll.
Guard: Yes you are!
PC2: No I'm not.
Guard: Then why are you green?
PC2: Its a skin condition.
Guard: Oh...well then why are you so tall.
PC2: Also a skin condition.
Guard: What?
PC2: Its glandular.
Guard: Huh?

As you can see, while he was a smart troll, the 'big words' he learnt he never really understood.

New one:

My (level 2) Bard thinks he's a charlatan who can't actually cast any real spells, just convince others that he can. (I was real careful about the spell list). Boy is he in for a surprise.

I have a Mage (variant spellcaster of my own invention) who tries, really tries, to be a great and menacing villain--but he just can't.
It's not that he's not evil enough--his favorite pastime is hurling fireballs at small children--it's just that in terms of incompetency, he makes Fizban look like Elminster. His plans never work, his minions are even more pathetic than he is, and the only heroes he's ever defeated were a party of retarded orcs who decided to find out what would happen if they pulled a big lever labeled "pull to release anvil."
Oh, and his name is Herman.
