ok i hope this is the right place, my dm is starting a campaign where we will all be starting at first level (kinda) but will all be getting a free ecl of three. ive decided to play a druid but im having a hard time finding a ecl 3 race that fits a druid. especially since i wanto keep a somewhat normal shape, and remain a someone respectable character (so please no gnolls or anthropomorphic chihuahas). half fey interests me but is only ecl 2, any suggestions?

if the dm will allow it use templates, like weretiger or something, the were___ templates do give you a +2 wis at the first level of the template. Some interesting templates are at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20031212a I know you said you wanted to be respectable, but it is just an idea.

Half-Vampire is nice. Its in Libris Mortis. If your DM allows it, look through Savage Species for ideas.

Is your DM saying ECL (Effective Character Level) or LA (Level Adjustment)? Because ECL also includes class levels and racial hitdice. Meaning him saying you get a "free" ECL boost of +3 effectivly makes everyone 4th level chracters. So you could start out as a 4th level human druid by the way you worded it.

Also what's the idea behind the campaign? If the rest of the party is going to me a mismash of monsters and templates then the definition of 'respectable' broadens.

My personal suggestions would be Lizardfolk. 2 racial HD +1 LA= 3 ECL. Plus their favored class is Druid.

Play a Half-Water Elemental Jermlaine. The Half-Water Elemental is LA +3, and is from the Manual of the Planes, and the Jermlaine is from the Monster Manual II (both are updated in the 3.5 conversion guide), and has no level adjustment. You'd have a great Wisdom score (+8), and both the template and race fit for a druid.

Alright, I'm not sure how "respectable" jermlaines are, but they probably wouldn't be considered more than a nuisance, if you're worried about a response from townsfolk. They're fey.

If jermlaines don't float your boat, then you can just pick a core race, instead. Also, feel free to pick a different Half-Elemental template, as they're all LA +3.

half vamp is out because someone else in our party is doing one, i saw the weres and their neat, just the were is kinda pointless with a druid, and i carea bout alignment, so weretiger would be the only possible one for a druid(must be neutral on one axis) and i like to be good. i was looking at the manual to the planes templates and pretty much all of them caught my eye, but the elementals just didnt seem enough bang for the ecl buck and the half elementals spell lists usually matched teh druids too closely, in the end i decided half fey looks fun, and when i looked up what all hte spell likes do i dont think ill have problems with being underpowered. besides it seems like a fun character to play. by the way he said ecl, but he wanted us to take a template/race, so a free boost but i cant take the three levels which i would far prefer. thanks for the help.

Id of though were creatures would be out of the question the minimum ECL is 4 for a were rat coz u need to take in to account the animal hit dice. u could allways add together 2 templates such as an asimar with the reptilian template. ;)
