I need a reason to stay, sort of. [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've been playing a barbarian who originates from a rather primitive nomadic desert tribe.
I've given this tribe a bit of a klingon feel, honorable but brutal warriors who seek honor, glory and death on the battlefield.
Mekh'tor, my character was the son of a chieftan and next in line for the big spot once is father died in battle. But his younger bother Be'thor wanted to usurp the throne and used of Mek'thors weapons to murder his father in his sleep and almost succeeded wasn't it that Mekh'tor was lying with a woman that night and she concieved proving that Mekh'tor wasn't the murderer.
So the evil brother had fled to the place where we've been adventuring the small (former) pirate city of Renarde.
So Mekh'tor followed and recently brought his brother down restoring his honor.
He's also found a lot of half orcs (Mek'thor himself is a half orc) who have lost their way of honor and glory and since his brother had been the big man there Mekhtor pretty much took over.

But for the rest the city of Renarde has been nothing but trouble to him. Laws he can't understand, rules that don't seem to make sense to him etc.
So far the court system has taken over 2000 gold pieces in fines from him for assault and battery and attempts at murder. Mekh'tor has been defending himself exellently in court. "Yea I broke his nose. He insulted my honor. Wanna make something of it?"

So recently I've begun to think, if he has a tribe waiting for him at home. His brothers head in a bag, why is he staying in this strange and alien place?

Perhaps he doubts his ability to lead his tribe successfully, he saw his father as such a great man and wondered if he could truly follow in his foot steps. This self doubt is manifesting in a reluctance to return.

maybe he likes his new adventuring party particularly well. he wishes to adventure with them further. in this case, you could bend an adventure toward travelling back to your home tribe to appoint a new leader, as you arent staying.

kills two birds with one stone. you get a good reason, and you get another adventure out of it. if your DM is creative, he'll probably give you all a twist, too.

Both good ideas.
So far my character hasn't portrayed himself as insecure though.

He has 1 good friend in the party, the warmage who helped him a lot during the quest for his brother. He helped Mekhtor reclaim his honor so Mekhtor will stand by him until death.
The party leader, a gunslinger. He's okay he knows about the laws but he doesn't seem like a really smart man. A war is brewing and he wants to try and prevent it...
The other barbarian, met her once and she was rude and annoying. But she went into the jungle so we won't be seeing her again.
The cleric... He drinks and parties as well as any half orc. But he wears demon masks so I'm not sure if I can trust him...
The sneaky thief. Bah an honorless dog and weak to boot. He interferes with other people dueling.

We'll see how quick this war is going to happen, if the rest of the party wants to stop it. Well then we'll see about that.

perhaps there is a reason he wishes to stop this war as well?

I think he'd want to go back to the tribe as soon as possible, stick the brother's head on a pike and take over. He'll get his pick of women and the power that comes from ruling the clan, and clean out the rot that has no doubt set in since he's been gone, but how will his tribe fare in this inevitable war? Will she get caught in the middle like a wolf between two spears, or ally herself with the strongest army? Raiding the supply wagons can be profitable for a season, but what happens when the winner takes over and can focus on the orcish warbands? Maybe a diplomatic mission, with the help of his human friends, is a good idea.

Or perhaps he isn't ready yet to rule his tribe; he has gotten used to being free to roam. He may not want to settle disputes between warriors who squall like women, or listen to the shamans droning on and on about the gods and omens and sacrifices, or the soft half-orcs who want to start building irrigation ditches and fields like halflings.

Okaaaay what happened today in the campaign:

Really a bit weird and I don't understand it myself yet.

The ninja and his clan where hired to protect some wizard guy and another group of people wanted him dead. Turns out that the ninjas where hired by the auchan (think Drow but then more evil and better organized).
The party spends most of the time finding out why and its all just waay beyond my character to understand. About halfway through the session I felt in a right mind to kill the wizard myself but I knew there where like 10 high level ninja/assasins nearby who would off me the moment I would draw my weapon. Even my orc isn't that stupid.
Anyway we follow the leads while the town begins to grow more and more violent. A good thing because several of the powerful factions began to organize skirmishes. I would send a couple of men to clean up afterwards in order to seize weapons and other kinds of equipment.

So by the end of the session I've got a decently equipped army and we know the Auchan are going to bring about the end of the town in the main square. We head there, nothing. An NPC tips us that we need to be at the stadium.
Once there we see that the dark magic is already workin on the crowd. I send most of my army to clear out the stadium because we're planning on blowing it up.

The party splits. Me and the warmage (now my bloodbrother) head to find the assasin while the rest of the party heads down below to stop the dark ritual.
And in the middle of the fight the game ends. A cliffhanger, it will be back in about 4-6 weeks.

Well we had a cart loaded to the brim with barrels of gunpowder.
Unfortunately someone cast a wall of fire through it.
