| Thawmus05-31-07, 02:17 PM | Hello, I've only been playing D&D for about 2 years now, but I've played in numerous RPGs with other folk over time. Right now, I play in a campaign every week where I am using a Grey Elf Beguiler (and I'm using the advice in the Beguiler Handbook thread quite a bit), and so far, it's been a blast...... Except my party seems to be the only people in this world that actually hates me. And they barely even hate me. Even at 5th level, my Beguiler has been a very successful Battlefield Commander, which they appreciate a great deal. And my character demands a lot of respect as a result. My character also employs many many different aliases. Not even the DM knows what the true name of my character is. Unfortunately, there's not much cause for me to have these aliases in the first place. What I'd like to have my character become is to not necessarily become just a scoundrel (which comes naturally for the class anyways), but also a well-hated individual by the world. What I'm looking for is ways to really get under an NPC's skin, survive it, and be hunted down for it. In addition, ideas that I can give the DM for why my character might ALREADY be well hated, without mucking around with the DM's campaign too much. Anything that increases renown very quickly is a bonus. I'd also like to get some ideas on how to switch aliases constantly, without having my fellow party members screwing with it. Our party barbarian, for instance, has given me away almost every time (Although, again, it's been inconsequential, since the NPC's never heard of me, and doesn't care either way....and it'd be more fun if this turned into an "Oh crap!" moment more than a "Who?" moment). |
| Gideon_Gideonson05-31-07, 05:31 PM | Right. First, choose which persona is going to be hated. Just to be safe, I'd pick one that's not your actual self, since then enemies with True Seeing will be confused. Also, no self-respecting Beguiler would let himself be hated that much... Anyway...a good way to be hated (assuming you're not evil) is politics. Look at America...our politicians aren't exactly evil, but TONS of people hate them, because of their choices. So use your spells and social skills to your advantage. Sway people away from the logical, beneficial choices and towards decisions that will harm the society, community, or kingdom. Steal people's freedom of choice, be it through law or spell. Impersonate people and wreck careers and lives, leaving a calling card behind so your work is identified...but only after the fact. Soon you'll find that your character is dreaded world-wide. After all...which is worse? Some power-mad emperor killing everyone you know? Or some smooth-talking devil who has stolen your life and is turning everyone you know against each other, while you watch helplessly? Give me the power-mad emperor any day. But this sort of thing (along with the mindrape spell) got my DM to ban me from playing beguilers, so... Anyway, good luck! |

After a while it becomes a challenge. How many times can I con one man before he can see through all my facades. If you want the Barbarian to stop throwing away your disguise simply stop telling him your disguising yourself. Try slipping away from the party when you enter town or even just before and put on a disguise the Barb doesn't know. He can't give you away if he doesn't know its you. For even more fun try playing fortune teller and use him as a shell... but don't tell him in advance. Don't be afraid to take advantage of people if your a charlatan... unless its against your alignment. But even if it is try tricking people into giving you things that they really should be willing to give you anyway. Noone likes being made a fool of and it gets even more irritating if it was when they would have been willingly helpful anyway. |

The calling card is definitely going to be a regular part of my repertoire from now on. That's just awesome. :) And I didn't even think about entering town already disguised. I mean, I have all sorts of tools and spells to assist me in that already, I don't know why I didn't think of that. Thanks guys, this is a big help! |

Just rock up as "Norj-the rogue" or "Beliaz-the sorcerer" and dont even let them see your real face. If you want, you could fake your own death and just bring out a new disguise and claim its a new character (to the other players). You do this often enough and they wont know whats happening :P Peace |
