Hi. I'm about to join a gestalt game at level 2 and I've been working on a character. Mechanically I think I've gotten him worked out, but from an in-character perspective I've got nothing.

Mechanically he is an Azurin level 2 Necromancer // Incarnate (evil). The idea is to eventually progress to an Ur-Priest/ Wizard/Mystic Theurge//Incarnate/Necrocarnate (My DM allows theurgic classes in gestalt with some restrictions). With an alignment of Neutral Evil, and no Deity. Ability scores are as follows: Str 10, Dex 10, Con 17, Int 18, Wis 18, Cha 16.

From a personality standpoint I figure that he is going to be a ruthless, merciless, power-hungry necromancer (the best kind of necromancer really). But while the archetype is sound (by that I mean cliche), I'm just not sure why he would be what he is. Essentially I'm trying to figure out why he would take up necromancy, or why he would be so obsessed with gaining power.

So if anyone could give me ideas on how or why a necromancer would take up his art and how to play him, or point me toward some good references I would really appreciate it.

The character's incarnum [soulstuff] is actually drawn from the soul of an ancient necromancer king of old, who was defeated and whose soul was imprisoned in a gem and hidden somewhere by an angel and his mortal allies to prevent orcus's [demon prince of undead] demons from finding him, and working together to bring an army of undead into the material plane.

The necromancer's soulstuff is semi-sentient and is guiding you to free the Ancient necromancer king's soul.Meanwhile trying to develop in you a hunger for power and necromantic abilities characteristic of the ancient necro

and there's nothing wrong with unapologetically making a straight-up decadent, hedonistic, self-serving power-mongerer (enough modules are filled with such NPC's, though they're usually the bad guys). just this time, the avaricious would-be-dictator is controlled by you!
