| Veton02-19-04, 11:09 AM | My newest PC is a cleric, and I'm planning on picking up some levels in Sorcerer so that I can go into the Mysthic Theurge prestige class. For a bit of roleplaying flavor, I decided that he thinks that he wields arcane magic, and no one can convince him otherwise. Now I just need a background story. One of the main things would be why he decided to go down the spellcasting route, and why he belives what he belives. And some roleplaying advice would also be appreciated. He has 18 Wisdom, 18 Charisma, but 8 Intelligence. How should I roleplay those stats? Thanks for any advice! :) |
| Lomiir02-19-04, 12:01 PM | Maybe have him be a cleric to Mystra? Goddess of magic...you could reasonably say that divine magic of mystra might as well be arcane. |
| TranquilDarkness02-19-04, 12:29 PM | How long would Mystra allow one of her priests to be that ignorant of the styles of magic? Not long, IMO. A cleric with high wisdom, high charisma but low intelligence and completely ignorant of the ways of magic... I'd go for stubborn, quick to point out flaws in other people's arguments (perceived flaws..), likeable in a..childish way? DON"T give this character anything like knowledge or spellcraft, wouldn't work. |

Who's Mystra? My DM is using just the standard PHB dieties. Thanks for any advice! :) The only reasonable situation I could surmise would be: Your are a cleric of a magical deity (Boccob, perhaps Wee Jas), the reason you became a cleric was because *you* were aware of a 'magical ability' within your being - and your faith in your deity combined with your 'latent magical power' is what makes you a cleric. When you develop your arcane magical spontaneous casting, the proof of your 'latent talent' become obvious. You chose to become a cleric of a magical deity because the latent power within your blood, despite your best attempts refused to manifest itself; Clerics of magical deity helped you learn the wisdom of magical deity, and to allow the divine magic to channel through your being. With your faith in magical deity and your ability to channel divine magic, you are hoping to awaken the 'latent' ability you know you posses. The idea of a cleric, claiming that their divine magic comes from themselves, exclusively, sounds blasphemous. 18 WIS, 18 CHA & 08 INT: Your very wise, your widsom inspires people. People like being around you and often ask your advice. Sometimes when your talking and you get muddled, people can't help themselvs but finish your sentences (as your amiably struggle to get them out), or complete a thought (as you get tongue twisted to put into words the wisdom of your thoughts). A thoughtful, amiable fellow; occasionally gets muddled in speech and distracted by his/her many colourful and inspiring thoughts. CP |

I think the point I'm making, or trying to highlight is: Is your god, YOUR GOD; The god that grants you divine power, the symbol that you wear around your neck - that can drive away and destroy the undead, the god that grants you a link to its greater being: Going to accept one of his clerics, pretending (and thereby ignoring) that the power that you wield is yours - and not theirs? Talk about "Dad cutting you off." Go get yourself some attonement. CP |

CP Actually, he's a dietyless cleric. And he doesn't pretend that he is an arcane caster or ignore that he gets his magic from divine sources - he actually belives that the magic he has is arcane. |

From my perspective, it is a matter of faith. A cleric cannot be in denial of their ability, without losing their ability. If your DM rules otherwise, that's fine. Given your situation and your plans for your character, I came up with a method I thought was plausible. I've given reasons why I do not agree with your ability to use divine magic, while being in denial of it. CP |
