Ideas for a VERY Old Ninja [Archive] - Wizards Community

Essentially, I'm going to be playing a several thousand year old human ninja. I'm thinking that my justification for acting as an assassin is that I see life as much more ephemeral (even long-lived life like elves). His justification is something along the lines of "You're going to die soon anyway." (his soon being a bit more relative to his age than the common usage of the term). Probably going to have the dark template too.

This in mind, can anyone think of interesting character traits, ideas, or stories?

Edit: Also, I need reasons for why his thousands of years of experience have failed him, he'll be starting level 18 or 19 (replacing a dead character), but still, one would imagine that if you've been a ninja for thousands of years, you're going be epic. So, why is he not? Perhaps something happened? Perhaps he took a few centuries off for some reason and got rusty. Again, any more ideas?

Link the low level to his shade template... perhaps aquiring it took away some of his life force or something... draining him.

OR

Perhaps (I prefer this one) he *was* epic and travelled to the Shadow Plane and took on a horde of Shadow Dragons... they all blasted him with their breath weapons to the point where he was taken to the level he starts at, and he aquired the shadow template (His essence was forever tainted by shadow or something)

That or he went to sleep for a few hundred years to see what the world would be like in the future.. and he is working the stiffness out of his bones.

Have fun.

I forget which book it was in, but in one of the sourcebooks that discussed Liches, it mentioned that such characters generally advance in levels much more slowly than normal PCs (that is, more slowly even than their LA would indicate) because, as essentially immortal creatures, mortal concerns like trying to get everything done within a single lifetime no longer apply. Perhaps your assassin has, for the past few centuries, taken a similarly long view on honing his skills and practicing his trade.

Try the lastest Dragon Magazine, it has rules for playing just what you describe, and explanations for why 'Elders' start the campeghn at first level. Definately what you need.

He could have been epic once, and (though there are no rules outlining this) he decided to settle down and start teaching. Without any true challenges, he lost his edge and is now a fraction of his once amazing self.

I bet you can guess why I wanted to make this character in just one try :D

Is he the only ninja like that? Does he know other people as old as he, if not older?

Here's an idea. What if his memories of his past and of his training was wiped clean? It sort of negates the thousands of years of experience right there, not to mention memories of personal anecdotes, romances, history, etc.
