I couldn't find any pertinent threads using the search button, sorry if this has been discussed at length before.

I'm playing a sorceror for the first time. I've decided that rather than being a pure artillery machine, I'd try something more subtle.

So I'm trying to use enchantments more than evocation spells.

So far, I've had one solid RP succes when I charmed a key NPC with a lousy Will save. Thats one good success out of 4 sessions. The +5 saves that folks get against charm is killin' me. My bluff is maxed, so in a city setting I'm better at getting a charm off when my party isn't brandishing weapons.

Does it get better? Has anybody used Dominate or Charm Monster in a campaign with any regularity?

How effective are other enchantment spells that keep monsters from attacking (crowd control), such as Hideous laughter, Sleep etc?

Are there other spells that are good for crowd control or charming that I may be missing?

Any advice will be appreciated! If its been covered in other threads, feel free to include a link to them as a response.

Hmm... this sounds like a question for the Character Optimisation Board (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=339).

Hmm... well, what kind of person is he? I remember on the mature boards, a DM was whining because the party sorceror was casting Sleep on female villiagers and having his way with them. But assuming he isn't a serial rapist, you probably won't bother with that sort of thing, and the spell Sleep will become next to useless as you gain levels.

Type of person:

Banthor, My human sorceror, is a refined middle class bussinessman. He owns an arcane curio shop called "The clever Asp" after his familiar.

Banth, as he is known to his party, is known for his silvery tongue, penchant for gambling and tendancy to try local decadent customs.

Ideally, he will not sully his hands with menial combat, but would rather use his silvered tonge or spellcraft to either incompacitate his opponents, or turn them to his side.

The only bad lie would be the one that you get caught at.

Banthor is Chaotic good, and has a sorta 'means justifies the ends' attitude. If he has to charm a gaurd to free an innocent prisoner, there are no ethical issues using the gaurd in that manner. Internal justification for his actions are 'Well, I didn't kill the gaurd...'

Banth would not use Charm person, Dominate etc. to take advantage of innocent villagers for carnal pleasures. He would do so to gather information regarding a current adventure he is on, however.
...

So what I'm looking for are creative ways to use various enchantment types of spells that would support this type of character. I'm assuming there are folks on this board who have played similar character types, and I'm looking for ways to keep my character interesting, yet effective as an adventurer.

I once played an Elven wizard specializing in enchantment spells that was quite effective up until level 15 where the campaign ended.

Some feats you'll want to keep in mind are:
(Greater) Spell focus: enchantment
Silent and Still spell - for casting charm et al in a crowd
Maximize spell -

Spells (other than obvious enchantments like charm and dominate)

Combat:
Hypnotism - crowd control, use with Maximize spell to affect 8HD worth of creatures.
Color spray - crowd control
Blindness/Deafness - CC

Out of combat:
Alter self - Great multipurpose spell to have anyway
Detect thoughts - listen to surfact thoughts. Useful for information gathering.
Eagle's splendor - Charisma buff

Keep bluff maxed. If you intelligence is good, think about taking up a cross-class skill like disguise or gather information. Maybe think about taking some levels in rogue for the skills...

Have fun with it. The character sounds like he'll be a blast to play!

I've always liked the enchanters best. Those spell rule!

Right now I'm playing a telepath psion. I'm also a vampire so the extra elc makes sure I'm not able to cast high level spells. But the extra cha from the vampire template gives me high DCs.
It's really funny. I play a very arrogant char, lying and deceiving. Also I would very much recommend disguise as a skill. True seeing can't see through it.
Also you might want to consider making your char a bit eccentric. I fx. always make a dex check to try and my cloak around in a cool way when I leave. When in real fights I wear a black full plate and an animated shield and wield a parrying longsword. Not that I could hit a castle, even standing inside it.
I ride on my shadow dragon (my cohort). Being evil and mindmessing is a great combo.

I forgot to mention that the campaign uses only core books, and we start at level 5.

I don't have the options of using vampire templates or the psionic handbook.

Rasmus, did you take a level of fighter to be able to wield a longsword and heavy armor, or use up 2 feats? Regardless, my character disdains physical combat (and labor)

QuiteMortal: great advice on feats. At level 6 I'll take silent spell.

I'm thinking of taking suggestion as my 3rd level crowd control spell. It seems to have good flexibility as long as I can speak the language.

Are there magic items that allow me to communicate in other languages? Should I invest in a helm of telepathy?
