If you were playing the Son of Gruumsh.... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm starting a new character to begin on Friday. The other players in the campaign will continue with their characers, but mine had become redundant as the line-up of players changed...

So, I've come up with playing a half-orc who is the son of Gruumsh... or at least he thinks he is....

Whether he actually is, just imagines himself to be so, or has been misinformed in some way is open to development by my DM and the course of the campaign.

What kinds of behaviors would you think were a 'must' for a character like this? His Int is low (7), so I'm already on board with him not being too quick. It'll be hard for anyone to convince him he isn't what he thinks he is.

Like eveyone, I have a thinking part that wonders what the part that isn't thinking, isn't thinking of... (i.e., what obvious stuff am I overlooking?).

I appeal to the collective conscious of the boards to throw ideas at me.... we'll see what sticks.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're asking for...

How does being the son of gruumsh affect the character? Does he see himself as the savior of orc-kind?
Does he feel that this grants him some form of religious or racial authority?
Does he believe that he is the only son of gruumsh, or just one of many children?

It could be fun to play him like an orcish Jesus. Let him tell* the orc chiefs or elders that they have misunderstood Gruumsh message.
Let him question* the petty raiding the tribes are reduced to and try to launch a gargantuan green tide of waagh.

*To question or tell an orc something obviously doesn't mean discussion, but killing until all agree with you.

How high is his Wisdom? This is the stat that will determine the way that he views the world, and how he reacts to the news of his Parentage. What classes are you thinking about taking?

Does he care?
Does he blurt it out all the time?
Does Gruumsh himself feed the delusion and/or know that he's his son?
Does Gruumsh care?
Does he like Gruumsh and/or what he stands for?
Will he try to take control of the Eye's of Gruumsh?

These types of questions should solidify the character for you.

Good Luck

Good stuff here, too. For what it is worth, Hargeth's Wisdom is 13.

I think he'll be an arrogant son of bear, full of the 'fact' of his lineage, and I think after 30 years I'm enough of a roleplayer to not make this obnoxious to the rest of my gamer buddies. He won't eat the elf PC upon meeting him, since it's easier if your larder can transport itself... He'll expect a certain amount of reverence, but will be easily distracted so can 'overlook' (read: forget) disrespect. That kind of thing....

Thinking over the ideas you've brought up, I think it might be good if he believes he needs to overcome some sort of 'trials' -- vaguely understood (at best) by himself -- to gain the full impact of his heritage, so that should keep him in check somewhat, too.

Thanks for helping me bounce the ideas around! Always helpful when needing a character on short notice...

I think it'd be fun if, after a while, your friends discovered that the "Grummsh" Hargeth believes he's related to is not at all *the* Grummsh. Ie, your character has a completely false idea of who Grummsh really is, or his religions notions are all mixed up.

"Don't you.. dislike elves? Their god maimed your father!
- No, no, no, you got it all wrong. Corellon took Luthic's eye in battle, and Grummsh came to the rescue, riding twin bulls with red horns. The sissy elf god ran away from the sight, and a thirsty Grummsh, kneeled to drink from the Fountain of Glory. Thus he became the patron god of ponds and fountains. Heh, it's simple really. Don't you guys know *anything* about the gods?? Sheesh!"

Funny if there's a knowledgeable player around the table to see all those mistakes.

Also, he's been told by an orc priest that as an orc, he was "the son of Grummsh", but he took it at face value.

Just a few quick ideas.

:cookie: Now we're talking. The 'face value' idea I had had, but felt it was a little flat and couldn't think of a good punch line for down the line.

But the muddled mythology idea is perfect. He's got a 7 Int! I never play low int characters (well, the one I did in the past) as complete idiots. (Previous low Int character was just not good at remembering details or faces). The idea that Hargeth has muddled his heritage and the details surrounding Gruumsh blends prefectly with his low Int, especially along with a must-have inability to comprehend 'alternate' (read: true) accounts of Gruumsh and the Orcish Pantheon.

I've always known he's absolutely convinced that he is the genuine son of Gruumsh, and that the truth didn't really matter to him, whether it comes up in the campaign, or not. Now I've got some tasty icing to put on that cake! :D

Anybody got a cherry for the top...? :cloud9:

It's gonna get hilarious if you come up with different explanations and mythos each time someone asks you. Plus, it's easier for you because you don't have to worry about remembering what Hargeth remembers wrong and what he remembers right.

When you start running on empty, just grab a book about your pantheon and the ideas will start flowing again.

Glad you liked it!

I can almost guarantee you this will end in a religious debate, may want to edit this.

Oh, sure. A quiet little thread, but now that we have the words "religious debate" in here, all the folks looking for an argument by searching for just those words, will find us...
