I was thinking today about who my favorite characters in movies have been, and who I would love to play as a D&D character.

My answer would be Tristan from King Arthur. Mysterious, good with a bow and a sword, has a hawk scout companion... cool as all get out.

What about you?

The Man in Black, from The Princess Bride.

He's who I'm currently playing. Lots of fun! And there's a half-ogre in the party who I treat like my "Fezzick".

Oh,I don't know. Maybe I'll play a human half-golem psychic warrior in black armour who uses a brilliant energy longsword and loves the 3rd level power Crisis of Breath. (If you can't figure it out from that, you are beyond help.)

Marv or Dwight of Sin City fame.
Thought not a movie I'd love to play a character like VAMP from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty I imagine he'd be a Warlock/Rogue and eventual Master Thrower.

I'm not sure I've ever actually based a character I'm playing off a character in a movie or book. I think I might like to try some kind of elk or deer rider like the guy in Princess Mononolke.

Murphy Macmanus , boondock saints, cheeky bastard both rude as arrogant.
Though usually rather easy going and always up for a good sadistic joke. It's not the part that my character looks like him, i just tempt to play my characters that way.

Wesley Wyndam Price from the TV serie Angel, especially season 4. I like his "dark side" and his ability to make the big decisions without becoming evil.

or maybe Cordelia Chase from the same TV series, especially season 3. I like her "b**chy" side, her ability to always says what's on her mind and off course, her great heart. The vision thingie might be an interesting aspect to roleplay.

12-25-06, 02:48 AM
Alita / Gally.

She counts because they made a (crappy!) OAV of it.

All I need to do is convince a dm to let me use a feat to make unarmed strikes count as two-handed weapons, and then it's a (Decisive Strike) Monk 2 / Barbarian 5 / Frenzied Berserker wraped up in the waify frame of a little female elf ... :D Maybe with some Warblade thrown in ('cause I'm totally into that class right now, and it sorta fits... maybe use it for the last three levels - Stormguard Warrior + Frenzied PA = ow, and in keeping with the character. )

12-25-06, 03:45 AM
The best characters are not based on the big movie heroes (that ripoff is too obvious), but on interesting side characters.

The last one that got me hooked is the great Cavaldi from the "Brothers of Grimm" movie. The movie itself was a pile of crap, but I loved the Italian accent of that character.

Invader Zim (Megalomaniac Halfling!), Capt. Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly, Jayne Cobb also from Firefly (also I look for any excuse to wear my Jayne hat so...), Joe Pesci (from Casino, Goodfellas, etc), Wolverine (Levels in Ranger, ya think?)

I'm thinking about doing a Frenzied Berzerker version of Conan the barbarian.

Something about punching camel/horse appeals to me today.

12-27-06, 01:22 PM
Wesley from the Princess Bride. Dashing and clever and romantic, plus it was just such a great movie.

Willy Wonka, either Wilder or Depp. That would be fun to try to work into a game, if not really my normal style.

The character I am currently working on is a bit closer to Van Wilder, or maybe to a Vince Vaughn character.

As for characters, I just remembered that I'm playing a rip off of Cameron "Shaft" Mitchell from SG1 in a side campaign I'm in (only meets once a month though, hence why I forgot about it).

The main Goblin from Legend (1985 Ridley Scott movie).
Devlonir

12-28-06, 11:35 AM
Eomer from the Lord of the Rings.

I imagine him as a horseback fighter with all horseback feats (making him deadly in a horse charge).
For personality, the things that draw me most are the loyalty to the people, not the current laws of the lands (so he will be chaotic) And the fact that although he is a noble man, he is slightly stuck up and easy to judge (see the initial mood in the first encounter with aragorn and the way he judges merry and eowyn's will to fight at Gondor)

I have a changeling rogue/psion who is basically just that.

That or Achilles from Troy. He was just so fun to watch in battle.

Ok, some people have already posted some cool obsure characters:

1. Boondock Saints
2. Aliens
3. Legend

I would definitely like to play Apone or Vasquez from Aliens.

"Every meal is banquent, every formation a parade!"

But my favorite fantasy would have to be King Theodin. I think is is a kick-ass character. He spent his whole life kicking ass and taking names for his country. He is at the end of his days and it looks like he is going to go out like a punk. But, he is brought back by Gandalf the Grey. He leads his people against impossible odds at Helms Deep, then rallies them to the aid of Gondor because of an ancient oath of mutual aid. Then he leads one final glorious charge that saves the day for Gondor and victory to the field. It had to take the Witch-King to take the old bird out, and he went out like a G!

I'm partial to deeply flawed characters who aren't necessairly great in combat, but who somehow become useful nonentheless, despite their huge weaknesses. Two characters come to mind:

1. Monk, with his obsessive compulsive disorder, is a total pain in the a--, but incredibly useful in detecting EVERYTHING; imagine someone like that in your party who everyone has to constantly take care of, but who can see around every plan any villain ever concocts or detect any trap that the players might walk into or see through the disguise of any betrayer. The party would want to dump him at every turn because he wouldn't hold a weapon unless it was completely polished and cleaned and then he still woudn't fight, and he could never sleep outdoors, always demanding the cleanest inn or tavern, and he would need a nurse to watch for him. But the group would keep him because he was invaluable in other areas.
2. The last samurai from Seven Samurai (not Tom Cruise, but the Kurosawa Seven Samurai): my favorite samurai in that movie, and one of my favorite characters, was the guy who wasn't even a samurai (the Toshiro Mifune character), but a farmer. The rest of the samurai see him at first as a disgraceful drunk, but he eventually proves himself a hero by use of sheer will and courage.
The Brat Prince

12-29-06, 02:16 PM
Gabriel from "Constantine" Chaotic Neutral Aasimar or half-celestial. Not sure of class, but i just love his/her attitude of doing utter evil for the "greater good" and meanwhile being totally insanely convinced that s/he is doing God's Will.

Holly Golightly from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" Chatoic Good or Chaotic Neutral human or elf bard/sorceress. Love the totally flippant attitude masking a scared little girl.

Mr. Teatime from Terry Pratchett's Hogfather. (I know it's a book, but they did make a TV adaptation out of it.)

Actually, we're considering doing a high-level campaign featuring villains from various books and movies, and it's pretty much set now that Teatime will be one of them, so I might just get my wish if I can grab the character sheet before the other players do.

"Now for wrath, now for ruin, and the world's ending!"

Yeah, Theoden is definitely one kickass old regent. A party meant for mounted combat and focused on campaigns in an open-plains type region would actually make for an interesting departure from the usual claustrophobic dungeon crawl.

A Grammaton Cleric from Equilibrium would be interesting. Massive attacks per round, high accuracy, and no armor or even dodging. Kill em fast before they can react to kill you. Perhaps some sort of active counter ability where you get to strike any time someone makes an attack against you?

Hmm... let's see- any character Christian Bale ever played (including whatshisface from Equilibrium- also, he does a fairly kickass Batman).
Any character Edward Norton has ever played (most notably, his character in Fight Club).
Jason Bourne. Amnesia is such a convenient plot device, isn't it?
Don Cheadle's character from Ocean's 11/12. Cheeky cockney explosives guy.

Edit: if we're doing videogames, then the Prince from the Prince of Persia series of games.

personally, i wouldnt have link as a ranger. i see him as more of a fighter, since he needs all the mounted feats, power attack, cleave, whirlwind attack, leap attack, exotic weapon proficiencies (clawshot, ball & chain, spinner), and most archery feats. plus he doesnt have a favoured enemy, or an animal companion. (epona doesnt count, and he may have goblins as a favoured enemy now ^_^).

(the master sword isnt very impressive in d&d statistics, is it? all it is is a bane evil bastard sword.)
Bearded_baddy

I am partial to Rell - the cyclops from Krull. I see him as a goliath scout type character. Fast and deadly.

I also like Seth - from Beastmaster. He was one bad*** monk always using a quarterstaff even when he didn't need too.

Now that Complete Scoundrel is out I would also like to play Bill Pardy - Nathan Fillion's character in the blockbuster hit Slither.

Hrm. I really don't have any movie characters I really want to emulate. My hubby made up a character reminiscent of Darth Maul, but I'm as yet to be terribly tempted. Books, however.. Terry Pratchett has a plethora of characters I'd love to play. My hubby made up a character reminiscent of Darth Maul, but I'm as yet to be terribly tempted.

History Monks. Probably have to multi as monk/sorceror.

Cohen the Barbarian, or his feminine counterpart, Vena the Raven-haired. Kick. Butt. Geezer/Granny. With a sword. Would definitely need some levels of monk to get the wisdom bonus to AC, and would have to be pretty high level. So.. probably not going to happen anytime soon, but I'm making the character anyway, just to have him/her on paper.

Some manner of grand vizier. There are several in the books, my favorite being Lord Hong. Fighter/wizard would probably be most accurate and the simplest way to put him on paper.

(the master sword isnt very impressive in d&d statistics, is it? all it is is a bane evil bastard sword.)What you use to aproximate The Master Sword depends apon what you use to aproximate Gannon's bolt's of evil energy and what else have you.

For the purpose of my Gannondorf aproximation, the energy balls are the warlock's Eldritch Blast, which functions as a level 1 spell, which means it can be affected by Spell Turning (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/spellTurning.htm). My MasterSword is an adamantine +5 Holy Longsword with use activated Spell Turning. Functionaly 404,315gp, but effectively priceless.

I've played a Forgotten Realms game set in the town of Waterdeep. My main character was a city guardsman modeled after Inspector Clousea (Peter Sellers), from the Pink Panther movies. Another favorite, I had a monk modeled after (Mister Moriata), Karate Kid movie. Ahh many more.. A warforged Barbarian in an Eberron setting, modeled after the (Daleks), Docor Who. Would go on a rampage with cleave flying, yelling in a metallic monotone shriek.. EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!

I've gotta say anyone from braveheart.

William Wallace. Fighter with a really good cha and the leadership feat. Maybe a little sorcerer so he can shoot the lightning bolts from his ass.
Hamish. Trusty barbarian brawler with a greataxe.
Campbell. Hamish's grizzled veteran barbarian father.
Robert the Bruce. Noble. Probably a misguided Paladin trying to the best for his country.

Bookwise, I'd have to say a few characters from Terry Brook's Shanara novels.
Allanon - Crazy Druid
Garet Jax - His title is the weapons master... need I say more?
Flick Ohmsford - Could definitely be a rogue. Anyone else that can be disguised as a gnome and sneak into an enemy encampement of 15000 or so troops gets my respect any day.

Snake Pliskin from Escape from New York. He has an eye patch and Kurt Russell’s attempt at a "bad-ass voice." While trying to play as that Snake would be almost comic, the evolved version, i.e. the alias that Solid Snake takes up during Metal Gear Solid Sons of Liberty would be interesting. Hell, he possesses knowledge on just about every random topic, great physical skills, and has the ability to charm just about any woman on sight. Basically, he has high stats in everything and a love for toppling sinister plots. YEAH!
Gwyddyon

01-15-07, 01:03 PM
Herger the Joyous from The 13th Warrior. A plain fighter around 8th level (with perhaps a level or two of bard) using a simple longsword, some chainmail, and THE POWER OF A VIKING.

"Lo there do I see my father
Lo there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers
Lo there do I see the line of my people

At a convention game, I was given the character Mortimer Brewster from Arsenic and Old Lace. Apparently Mortimer had snapped and was taken to sharing elderberry wine with his traveling companions.

I usually do decent accents, but I know my Cary Grant was terrible. ;)

I think if I were to choose a character from the movies, I'd go with Zatoichi, blind masseur, gambler, and swordsman. Katsu Shintaro rules!

Many years ago, I chose a character from a book to play: Witherwing, from the book of the same name by David Jarrett. I rather liked the character, who (according to the story) was transformed into a swan as a child by the Queen of Winter, along with his brothers. His sister sewed lilies into shirts to transform her brothers back into human form. She finished them all, except the left sleeve for the youngest.

"So Witherwing was he called, for what his sister could not sew. No arm upon his left side but a god's wing would he know."

Kayako from Ju-on.. Have no idea how to make her, but still, I think that would be awesome...
I heard people mention Wesley and Fessik from princess bride, but no one has mentioned Indigo... so that would be another.... Swashbuckler seems to fit the best.
That's all I can think of right now...

All my characters thus far have been Van Helsing. I'm currently on Van Helsing Mk. III simply because i just recently started playing, so im still learning character basics.:P

My next character will be a Bladesinger based on Zechs Marquise/Milliardo Peacecraft from Gundam Wing.
I love the concept of a man willing to do anything to achieve total pacifisim, even waging horrific war to convince humanity that war is wrong. That inner conflict would be fun to play out.

I actually do play Ganondorf in an Eberron campaign run by my step-bro. He's largely based off the SSBM Ganondorf, so he's a Gestalt Warlock/Monk. I plan to going on further into Enlightened Fist while on the other side taking levels in Scout.

From a Movie, I'd have to say I would want to play Papa Midnight from Constantine. Voodoo Priests FTW!!!

You forgot the coolest of the bunch, the irishman. I can't remember the name but you can tell by his famous lines...

"Yes father, the Allmighty says don't change the subject just answer the F*****g question"

One I would like to try out is Jeffrey Chauser (Knight's Tale)
Bard with a gambling problem has got to be fun...

"Bullet Tueth" Tony from Snatch or any other character this guy has done for that matter. (Can't remember the actors name, but he's one bad mother ___)

I'm currently playing a kind of religious knight inspired greatly by the Hospitaler in Kingdom of Heaven. Great character IMO.

Heh, Big Trouble in Little China

An artifcer/master alchemist with alot of potions of heroism and a bag of holding he's filled with beads of force, suspension spheres of various elements, and potions of heroism. .... Egg Shen

Egg Shen: Can see things no one else can see. Do things no one else can do.
Jack Burton: Real things?
Egg Shen: As real as Lo Pan!
Jack Burton: Hey, what more can a guy ask for?
Egg Shen: Oh, a six-demon bag!
Jack Burton: Terrific, a six-demon bag. Sensational. What's in it, Egg?
Egg Shen: Wind, fire, all that kind of thing!

And of course everyone's favorite rouge Jack Burton.

Let's not forget my favorite swordsage. Wang Chi.

Wang Chi: That's why the bottle didn't slice. My mind and my spirit are goin' north and south.
Bard-of-all-trades

Before there was Capt. Jack Sparrow there was ...
Jack Burton (Big Trouble in Little China) "It's all in the reflexes"
Then I'd go with ...
"Trooper" Sean Thornton (Quiet Man) a great "tormented" hero
Rooster (Rueben) Cogburn (True Grit and Rooster Cogburn) a grizzled, veteran ranger
Any of the leads from the Magnificent Seven - all had great hooks for characters
Leopold ?? (Kate and Leopold) a pompous, but well-meaning sort fighting the status quo
Jeremiah Johnson (Jeremiah Johnson) a world-travelled warrior/ranger/barbarian (with a favored enemy of bear)
Spartacus (Spartacus) a people's defender
Cactus Jack (The Villain) the greatest bad guy since Wile E. Coyote
Doc Holiday (Tombstone) "I'll be yo'r huckleberry"
Ned Land (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, 1954) what a great bard he'd be

I once played a fanatical cleric who was a specialty priest of Kelemvor (2nd Edition) and who was obsessed with eradicating undead, necromantic magic, and necromancers to the point where he was a bit insane. I always pictured James Wood's character "Jack Crow" from John Carpenters Vampires as being the closest thing to him, :)

And I am thinking that Jeremiah Johnson would have favored enemy "Indian". hehe

I'm about to start a Warforged fighter (going into Warforged Juggernaut) in a mercenery campaign. I hope we get sent to apprehend someone so I can use the line, "Dead or alive, punk, you're coming with me."

I would definitely be Leonidis from 300.
Fighter with no armor and makes tons of shield bashes.
Cyanide300

03-12-07, 08:37 PM
Splinter, the venerable wererat Ninja/Monk.

Or maybe Mace Windu. LG Sorcerer/Monk/Mindspy with a ring of telekinesis, Deflect Arrows, and a purple briliant energy bastard sword.
Anansi

03-12-07, 09:54 PM
Has anyone mentioned Riddick yet? Or Ash? Or that priest from Dead Alive? ("Time for a little divine intervention!" "I kick ass for the Lord!")

03-12-07, 11:59 PM
One of the Harpists from the movie Kung Fu Hustle.

Fashioned as a warlock with ranks in perform (String), with the instrument that they have.
The somatic component of invocations would be the playing of the instrument.
Eldritch blasts shaped like energy-scimitars, while using Baleful Utterance, Sickening Blast, and other invocations that look like the Harpists used them.
Finish off with Improved Unarmed Strike (maybe Hideous Blow), and you have a midnight assassin what chops people's heads off with music and still holds his own in close-combat.
Tenadros

03-13-07, 01:31 PM
I think its been mentioned but the Viking who spoke greek in 13th warrior. The one who was friends with Banderas.

Basically a barbarian/bard. (the historical term would be skald I believe.) This or a warlock will be my next character.
Lhiannon Sidhe

03-14-07, 10:15 PM
I would definitely be Leonidis from 300.
Fighter with no armor and makes tons of shield bashes.

I admit it, after watching the movie, I made a character based on him. (For Exalted, however, not D&D). By the time I worked out the character biography, personality and motivations, the only similarities that remained were he was a professional soldier, and commanded a small force of elite soldiers, but the original inspiration was there.

I also played a D&D character based on Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkin's Van Helsing from Bram Stoker's Dracula that is) Who was a Necromancer/Cleric who studied Necromancy for the purpose of opposing undead.
Wonder_Petz

03-17-07, 10:37 PM

How about Vincent Vega from Pulp Fiction?

He'd be a career bad guy, but when he's not working, he's just like any other dude.

03-19-07, 04:36 PM
green lantern: paladin/master of the unseen hand with a ring of telekinesis and the spell thematics feat

Gandalf(movie version): cleric of obai-hai who goes around turning dragons and the like

(i'm almost abit ashamed of this one):embarrass
a kim possible/nick fury clone: scout with superior unarmed strike and a rod of rope. no idea how to build a ron stoppable though
the_taken

03-20-07, 02:31 PM
Ron stoppable probably has a similar (and less optimized) build to Kim's. Maybe with ninja levels? His real power comes from his fuzzy dice.
There's a feat from an online web article that grants an aminal companion. Or Rufus is an awakened rat cohort.

Shego is a Monk/Psychic Warrior making use of the various [ACID] powers. (Breath of the Black Dragon, etc....)

Aughra from The Dark Crystal

From Television Shows

Elim Garak from Deep Space Nine

Neo from the Matrix Reloaded. Monk who fights unarmed in black leather and is always running up walls and the like.:)

Porter, Mel Gibson's character in Payback. Most badass chaotic neutral SOB ever portrayed in a movie. No idea what class he would be. Maybe a Fighter/Rogue but that's a stretch.
Garidas

03-29-07, 08:40 AM
I would probably try to play somekind of a character from the movie 300.

Also if it were from a game I would try to play:
-Solid Snake
-Gray Fox / Deepthroat (Metal Gear)
-Vamp

-Garidas
nerdor257

The Phantom of the Opera. Multiclass Bard, Rogue and Swashbuckler. Probably neutral evil in alignment.
Wonton2006

04-03-07, 12:36 AM
V from V for Vendetta.
How cool would that be?
Rogue/Invisible Blade/Master Thrower, methinks.

My current character is turning more and more into him. I recently got a vest that can hold 10 daggers, as well as a belt that can hold 6 more. Can't wait to try it out in combat. :evillaugh

Right now I'm torn between Kevyn "I am not a mad scientist" Andreyasn from Schlock mercenary. Granted its no movie but its still good.

And the other would be Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully from The Hogfather.
Lanoitakude

04-10-07, 02:39 AM
My current NE Cleric of Afflux acts like the villian from the film Ravenous. I forgot the character's name, but he's one crazy son-of-a-gun. Sort of a wacky-brilliant-mad-sadist, prone to bouts of laughter at seemingly inapropriate times. He hasn't degraded to cannibalism yet, but he will eventually utilize dark magic to sustain his life force (think Slow Consumption from BoVD).
Darth Krieg

04-11-07, 08:12 PM
if i was to build a character from another source it would have to be a thundercat.

or rather a thundercats character. and that character would be Grune, the Destroyer.

He would be a catfolk fighter that has weapon focus morning-star, and a mwk morningstar that has an acid and fire enchantment (to represent his thundranium mace). a mace might make more sense after what i just said but his mace always looks more like a morning star. he would have bracer of armor, an amazing intimidate check along with quite an impressive strength score.

I haven't read all the posts.. but 300 man, any of the Spartans.
As soon as it was done (aside from feeling wickedly inadequate) all I wanted to do was fight and kill, I sized up the guy sitting next to me thinking 'yah, I could take him..' *back of my mind was - just need to roll a 12 or so..*

Connor MacCloud from the clan MacCloud. - highlander
Alice from Resident Evil
julian sands' Warlock character
Arthur, King of the Britons - as portrayed in the epic film monty python and the holy grail.

I actually played as a predator in a Champions game a few years back & had a set of characters loosely based on the movie Ladyhawke in a 2nd edition game.
Pandapeep

04-16-07, 05:23 PM
Deadpool'd be great. As would a warforged cleric of St. Cuthbert. Robocop, anyone?
Ront Iron-Roar

04-16-07, 09:16 PM
The Creeper from Jeepers Creepers.

I don't know how I would do it but man I would love to play him. Now, just how to do the limb regeneration? Maybe having eating the limbs be a focus for a variant of the Regeneration spell?

Garthom from Dark Crystal my Chuul Monster Class.

Doctor Who, I think would be some sort of Archmage.

Dr. Doom -Movie version - Pyrokineticist exchange the fire with electricity and instead of a deflection bonus give him natural armor and etc.

Super Battle Droid or Droideka - Warforged Soulknife/Pyrokineticist with a flaw to give it both Psiforged Body and Adamantine Body.

General Grevious - Rules wise I'd go with some Reptilian race at first and gain levels in Fighter/Ranger and then have the DM allow him to be placed in the body of a Nimblewright when he gets ressurected.

The Movie(/TV) character I played many years ago was someone built on Star Trek's Lt. Worf. Very stoic fighter who some people couldn't smile since it may break his face. Very serious but would make a joke from time to time. Played a human like that actually.

Movies, I am not sure...

Videogames, Max Payne!

Comics: Kobalt (if anyone remembers him from DC, the comics were becoming more popular than batman and superman, which was not good for money on the DC side. They shut down this great comic before the story was even finished.)
