| Tristan01-09-06, 04:24 PM | HI. I building a (10th lvl)Utility Wizard. However im having trouble thinking of all types of situations we might need spellcasting to help us in So far i've found a spell for locating cities (Locate City) have several in mind for shelters (Leamunds Secret Hut I think and the barrack version of Leamund's..whatever in the Heros of Battle book) for tactical transportation I've decided on fly mass and Swim(maybe) I suppose Knock, open/close portal, detect magic, and teleport would be good to. and scry err... well, Im mostly just naming spells here. I need to know what kind of things a "Utility mage" would need to do. Specific info to. not just "You need to be able to get information" thanks for the help :) |

| Morka01-11-06, 10:26 AM | You might have a better luck in the Magic and Spell (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=20) board. However, here's an utility spell I created: Detect Word Divination, Language-Dependant Level: Bard 1, Sor/Wiz 1 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 round Range: 60’ Target or Area: One object touched or 60-ft.-radius emanation centered on you Duration: Concentration, up to 1 hour/level (D) Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: No This spell is extremely useful when you are searching some specific information in a huge library or in a bulky book. While casting this spell, you must concentrate on a specific word. As long as you concentrate, any object (usually books, but it can be anything) containing this written word begin to shine with a blue light. If you cast this spell while holding a book or any other object with a long text (maximum 10 000 words/level), a faint blue light appears each time the specific word is encountered in the text. The light is strong enough to emanate when there is another object put on the word, or when the book is closed. This spell is language-dependant, it will only find the word in the specific language you are asking it; if the area contains books in more than one language, the spell must be cast for each language. For example, in a library containing books in both English and French, you might cast this spell to search the English word Fighter, and then you would have to cast the spell a second time for the French word Combattant. However, as long as you are under a Tongues spell, the Detect Word spell will search the asked word in any existing language. |
| Grizzled Gryphon01-12-06, 02:20 AM | Detect Word = Search engine!! Love it!! I could just see a michevious gnome wizard going into a vast library, and casting this with the word "the" as the target. And the Librarians freak as everything in the place starts glowing for no apparent reason... Heh Oops, just fully read the spell, and now see that it only works on the work in hand. Ah well, still a funny thought. |
